Science Content Area All Administrators Meeting July 31, 2014 Eric Hadley Coordinator of Science and Little Creek
Science • MSIP Points • Pacing guides K-12 • Priority Standards K-12 • Benchmarks K-12 update • District-wide: • Science Process • Integrate ELA, Math, and SS • Engineering designs and models
Science Standards and Assess • Assessed on GLE/CLE • MAP test given: • 5, 8 and Biology (11th grade)
Science Standards and Assess • 5th Grade Assessment: concepts grades 3, 4, and 5 • 8th Grade Assessment: concepts from grades 6, 7, and 8
Science Standards and Assess • Update on the state of science standards • Next Generation Science Standards • Used no federal funds • Used educators for writers • Excellent way of teaching science
Science Standards and Assess Next Generation Science Standards have 3 areas: • Concept (GLE) • Cross Cutting Concepts • Engineering Design
Science Standards and Assess • MO never adopted these standards • Waiting for MO Learning Standards • No different assessment is set for science yet.
Science Standards and Assess • NGSS included in the new standards in the curriculum and pacing guides when possible • 6th through 12th have included • Not included yet with the K-5
Science Concepts • 8 Strands for science • Force and Motion • Matter and Energy • Living Organisms • Ecology • Earth Systems • Universe • Inquiry/Science Process • Science and Technology
Science Kindergarten through 2nd grade • Science Coach—Christine Ries!! • Curriculum: • Real life experiences • Allow for hands-on—Build, model, question! • Outside experiences • Push/Pull objects • DESE: 30 minutes DAILY • Work on integrating with ELA, Math, and SS
Science 3rd through 5th grade • MUST TEACH SCIENCE (140 concepts possible on the 5th grade assessment) • All 3 years need to teach all concepts for their grade level: 45 minutes DAILY • Departmentalize
Science 3rd through 5th grade • 4th and 5th grades each have 3 units identified for supplemental materials and activities to support our curriculum. • Training will occur throughout the year in accordance with the pacing guides.
Science 6th through 8th • 6-8—One span. • New concepts for each grade level. • 6th Life • 7th Physical Science • 8th Earth • 2015-16 finalized • 6th grade important science year • Pacing guide is slower than the 7 and 8 • Benchmarks
Data Analysis • Examining the Item Benchmark Descriptors for science: • Examine all 3 grade levels
STEM TQ Elementary and Middle • STEM TQ—15 schools • Integration of S T E M • Solving problems • “STEMitizing” lessons
Science 9-12 • Biology EOC • Focus on Biology standards • 9-12 Performance Event/Science Process • Examine IBD’s
Science 9-12 • Biology Review continues to catch those that failed Biology before taking the EOC • Focus is Science Process and Biology Big Ideas
Science Quick Points • Grade spans • GLE/CLE based • Inquiry/science process is 25-35% • Can’t move students out of below basic without knowledge of science process • Strong K-5 science
Science Quick Points • Vocabulary for all levels • Integration with Math and ELA
Lego Robotics • Great experiences for the students • Helps to focus on the engineering and design of science • Problem solving and working together • ALL the skills for the work force (STEM TQ field trips)
Robotics=STEM Junior OR First Lego League (5-9) Airport, Bermuda, Combs, Duchesne, Holman, Lee-Hamilton, Wedgwood First Lego League (9-14) Berkeley Middle School Cross Keys Ferguson Middle First Tech Challenge (14-18) McCluer South Berkeley http://www.usfirst.org/
Lego Robotics • Funding • YMCA and YWCA has also supported some teams when funding is available. • Emerson STARs grant helped support some as well.
Science Experiences • EE-7th—Little Creek Nature Area • 5th-Sprouting Monsanto Astronaut • 7th and 8th—Emerson Stars • 8th—Challenger Learning Center
Performance Event Question Prediction/Hypothesis Identifying the Independent and Dependent Variables Constants Interpreting graphs Graphing
Green Committee • FFSD Green Schools Award • 10 key conservation points • School Representative • New for 2014-15—Support staff recognition
