No Smoking Day (NSD) is organised by a charity based in London. NSD aims to help people who want to stop smoking by creating a supportive environment for them, and by highlighting the many sources of help available to people who want to quit. What is the charity’s aim? The No Smoking Day charity aims to reduce tobacco related illness and death. It will do this by supporting smokers who want to stop through providing an opportunity to do so, and highlighting the effective help that is available. What is No Smoking Day?
What the Day does:- Spurs smokers into action - millions took part in NSD 2011- Appeals to smokers of all types - whatever their age, sex or social class- Publicises and explains the help that smokers can get when they want to stop- Captures the attention of the media with lots of supportive TV, newspaper and radio coverageWhat it doesn't do:- Try to force smokers to stop - it's for people who are already interested in doing something about their smoking- Harass smokers - it's not about banning smoking, or picking on smokers- Work in isolation - smokers need support before and after the NSD too
On the Day, the Day's main messages:- No Smoking Day is a good opportunity to stop- Smokers can get help when they want to stop- There are health and other benefits to stopping smokingWhat does No Smoking Day achieve? No Smoking Day is one of the biggest annual health awareness campaigns in the UK.With twenty-eight years of campaigning the Day has helped well over a million smokers stop for good.
About three quarters of smokers in the UK want to give up smoking and each year on No Smoking Day over 1 million of them attempt to quit. Research shows that every No Smoking Day over 100,000 of these will stay smoke-free for good. Over the last 26 years NSD charity have helped more than 1 million smokers give up smoking for good! The campaign generates fantastic coverage in national, regional and local media. In 2010 over 1,700 media mentions were generated and lots of these had information about the help available for smokers who want to stop, and about the benefits of quitting. The media coverage helps to generate awareness of the opportunity to quit and the chance to join in on the Day. What is achieved?
WHY SHOULD PHARMACISTS GET INVOLVED IN NO SMOKING DAY? NSD is a great opportunity for pharmacies to highlight the help that they can offer their customers year-round. Number of reasons why you should get involved: Smoking cessation shouldn’t be an extra Smokers often underestimate those risks. Those who do accept that the consequences can be severe, there is a tendency to think it will never happen to them. 1 in 6 of all annual deaths in the UK can be attributed to smoking. Therefore it’s very important that smoking cessation is integrated into all parts of healthcare to get the message across. Over a million smokers are expected to quit this No Smoking Day. That’s a million smokers who may be coming to your pharmacy for another reason and would appreciate having someone to talk to about quitting smoking.

Preparation - order posters and merchandise well in advance, decide what you want the stall to look like and make any extra props you need. Staffing - Try and have someone manning the display so that they can respond and give advice to interested parties Get noticed - you want to be visible from a distance, so try to use display boards or a wall where you can put up posters and banners Leaflets - who will you be talking to? SMOKING CESSATION SUPPORT THAT PHARMACISTS CAN OFFER YEAR-ROUND It is vital to understand the importance of cigarettes to smokers and to realise that despite this around two-thirds would like to stop. Pharmacists and their staff are in an ideal situation to talk to smokers about NRT and support them through their quit attempt. You can make your customers think about why they smoke and what is keeping them from stopping. By encouraging a smoker to stand back and think about the reasons they smoke you will be helping them take important steps towards quitting. Brief Interventions. If your patient has a go at quitting, they will need most support during the withdrawal phase, which lasts about a month after quitting.
