  3. REVIEW: • A variable is a letter that stands for a number. • An algebraic expression uses variables, numerals, and operations symbols.

  4. Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents. 6.EE.1 • Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers. • Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient). • 6.EE.2

  5. Key Vocabulary

  6. Key Vocabulary Term is a number or the product of a number and a variable. This is an expression with 2 terms.

  7. Key Vocabulary A Constant is a term that has no variable. 4n2 is a term and so is the number 7. The 7 is a term called a constant.

  8. Key Vocabulary A Coefficient is a number that multiplies a variable. variables

  9. When we say ‘evaluate,’ we mean to find the numerical value of the expression

  10. To evaluate an expression, substitute a number for each variable. Use the order of operations to simplify.

  11. Expressions can have more than one term. Simlifying expressions first can make calculations easier. To simplify an expression, follow the order of operations.

  12. Combining Like Terms “Like terms” are terms that have exactly the same variable factors. The terms below are “like terms” because each term consists of a single variable, x, and a numeric coefficient. 2x, 45x, x, 0x, -26x, -x
