IEEE- Chicago Section Science Kits for Public Libraries Project

This project aims to support public libraries in developing math and science collections for pre-university students, engage local community members in community service, and generate enthusiasm for math and science. It offers opportunities for building relationships with corporations, universities, and community organizations, as well as favorable publicity and recognition. The project has received funding from the IEEE Foundation and has awarded grants to libraries in multiple states.

  4. A Little History 4 2009 - Chicago Section Fund Established 2010 – Science to Go Prototype Project funded by the Chicago Fund was Completed 1/18/2012

  5. Building on Success 5 • We knew we had something special • Decided to seek funding from the IEEE Foundation • Chicago Section pledged $5000 from their Reserve • Region 4, Several Librarians, Dominican University and PLA wrote letters of support 1/18/2012

Project Objectives 6 • Support public libraries in the development of math and science collections for pre-university students. • Be a catalyst for educating students about how math and science are used for the benefit of humanity • Provide seed money for creation of library programs and projects that will make a lasting impression on a community • Demonstrate the skills required for a career in electrical engineering. 1/18/2012

  8. 2011 Project Progress 8 • April - IEEE Foundation Grant proposal submitted • June - IEEE Foundation and Life Member Board Approves $40,000 Grant Proposal • July - First Payment of $8000 Received from IEEE Foundation - Advisory Committee is Formed. • August – Documentation and Announcements • September - Press Releases and Notifications • December –Received 80 Grant Proposals 1/18/2012

  9. Grant Awards 9 • December - 25 Grants to Libraries in 9 States were approved • January - Awarded Libraries were notified and informed of the local Section Chair Contact 1/18/2012

Iowa 10 • Dubuque County LibraryCollaborative effort with Electrical Engineering Students from Northeast Iowa Community College • Marshalltown Public LibraryIncrease Participation in Lego League Competitions • Sioux Center Public LibraryInvolvement with Dordt College IEEE Student Branch 1/18/2012

Illinois 11 • Crystal Lake Public Library Expanding their STEM Learning Program • DeKalb Public Library Partnership with Northern Illinois University • Frankfort Public Library District Seeks to Offer Opportunities for Hands-On Science Investigation • Mahomet Public Library Will teach about technologies of the Smart grid and Renewable Energy • Moline Public Library Will Provide Support for 15 area schools 1/18/2012

  12. Indiana 12 • Adams Public Library-Decatur Plans to Promote the Program to Teachers • Danville Public Library Has Support of Purdue University • Greenwood Public Library IEEE's Kits for Young Engineers • Muncie Public Library Provide Concrete Examples of What Engineers do 1/18/2012

Pleasant Surprises 19 • Libraries love the idea of lending Science Kits to their Patrons • Several Libraries already have Science Programs • Corporations want to contribute • Kit suppliers are interested • IEEE Members have taken the initiative • Other foundations want to collaborate 1/18/2012

  20. 2012 Project Milestones 20 • January - Award Notification Letters will be sent to Section Chairs • February - Letters will be sent to denied Applicants and to Local Section Chairs • March - Approval of Science Kit Purchases • October – Monitor and summarize Progress Reports • December - Submit Plan for Sustainability 1/18/2012

Beyond 2012 21 • IEEE-Chicago Section Plans to Continue Grants to 1 or 2 Libraries Annually within the Chicago Section Territory • Look for Opportunities to Tell the Story at IEEE and Library Association Events • May Seek Another Grant from the IEEE Foundation • Implement plan for sustaining the project 1/18/2012

  22. How Can You Help? 22 • Encourage and Facilitate Member Involvement • Promote the Science Kit Project • Provide support for the Remaining Library Grant Applicants of Merit • Provide Ideas for Sustaining the Project beyond 2012. 1/18/2012
