HEALTY STRESS VS UNHEALTHY STRESS • Some stress is healthy and necessary without stress we wouldn’t be as succesfull when we are in danger stress helps us • Stress can be destructive when we feel we can’t control our lives things can seem overwhelming
THREE TYPES OF STRESS • ACUTE • EPISODIC • CHRONIC
ACUTE • Fight or flight • Intense chemicals are released into the bloodstream to help body react to defend itself • Comes on suddenly • Affects usually disappear quickly • Include things like loud noises crowds, or insect stings • In primitive times acute stress was needed to help people stay alive
EPISODIC • Occurs during certain periods of life, but not deadly • Triggers for teens entrance exams peer pressure parental pressure to get into a good college • Lasts longer than acute most people are able to manage without serious problems
CHRONIC • Life is filled with ongoing situations that are stressful but not deadly • These situations can cause chronic stress a mild version of fight or flight that last for days weeks or longer • Triggers family problems pressure at school illness relationship problems • This type of stress causes the most physical and emotional problems
SIGNS FOR SERIOUS STRESS • Feeling edgy, guilty or depressed most of the time • Laughing or crying for no reason • Only seeing the negative side of situations • No longer enjoying things that were once fun • Feeling angry toward others most of the time • Having headaches stomach aches or sleeping problems • Having trouble concentrating thinking clearly or remembering things
NORMATIVE VS. NON NORMATIVE STRESS • The three types of stress can be categorized into two categories • Normative – is events that are expected to occur • Non-normative – caused by things not expected • Examples of normative relationship issues and grade anxiety • Examples of non-normative is serous illness, divorce in the family assault rape etc.
