Pertussis is a health threat for: • you • babies • co-workers • their families • clients you serve • your entire organization
A Growing Community Concern • Pertussis cases are on the rise across the U.S. • Oregon: Nearly 300% increase since last year • 12/19/11: 318 • 12/19/12: 869 • Washington State: 600% increase in 2012 • 12/15/11: 781 • 12/15/12: 4,658
Illness Symptoms • Starts like a common cold • sniffles, sneezes, mild cough • Cough gradually gets worse • leading to gasping, whooping, or vomiting • Often milder in teens and adults • Slow recovery • cough can last up to 6 weeks!
Complications • Infants: • periods of no breathing • pneumonia • seizures • death • Children, teens, and adults: • difficulty sleeping • vomiting • loss of bladder control • broken ribs from violent cough
What Can I Do? Vaccinate & Wash Your Hands! • Child vaccinations (Dtap) • Adult vaccinations (Tdap) • Respiratory hygiene (handwashing, etc)
