In Southern Africa, several factors contribute to the spread of the HIV virus. For one, a stigma (n. 耻辱,污名) is attached to admitting to HIV infection and using condoms. For another, many people deny that the HIV virus causes AIDS: Thabo Mbeki and Robert Mugabe have both suggested AIDS stems from (起源于)poverty rather than HIV infection. AIDS
HIV/Aids - Growing Old With HIV It‘s hard enough dealing with the aches and pains that usually come with getting older, but when you’re HIV-positive(艾滋病毒感染), aging brings more chronic illnesses and even more medication; many health systems are not ready to cope with this relatively new phenomenon. Data on aging with HIV is largely restricted to(大大局限于)the developed world and very little is known about older Africans living with virus, despite the high caseload in this region. A July 2012 supplement of the medical journal, AIDS, notes that an estimated 3 million people in sub-Saharan Africa(撒哈拉以南之非洲地区)aged 50 and older are HIV-positive - 14 percent of all infected adults.
South Africa: Committee Welcomes New Treatment Regime The Portfolio Committee on Health welcomes the new HIV treatment regime which will see HIV positive patients only take one pill a day, instead of the three pills they have been taking on a daily basis. The new treatment regime will be rolled out from today and the Committee applauds the department for this, as it will make the lives of those on treatment easier. “It will make compliance(顺从,服从)easier for people who are on treatment, as they won't necessarily default on the treatment, as defaulting builds up resistance," says Committee Chairperson, Dr Bevan Goqwana. The new treatment regime will also serve as a preventative measure to the virus as it will lower the viral load. However, the Committee is concerned that delivering medicine to rural(农村的)areas is still a challenge for the department and hopes that the department will ensure that the delivery of the new regime reaches even the most remote areas of South Africa. "The treatment will be meaningless if it can't be accessed by everyone, and we urge the government to ensure that it's accessible to everyone," says Dr Goqwana.
Hunger is spreading in Africa Despite progress in boosting democracy(大肆宣扬民主), ending wars, and economic growth, Africa is the only region in the world becoming less and less able to feed itself. Reasons include the relentless(无情的) spread of desert and drought, high population growth, bad governance, and the world community's flawed hunger-response system. In all, "Things are moving in the wrong direction," says Marc Cohen of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington. "If we look at sub-Saharan Africa as a whole, all the projections are that poverty and hunger are going to get worse."
The hunger issue in Africa is one that has been garnering attention for decades, and yet the issue persists. This is one of the reasons why continuing to raise awareness about the plight (境况,困境)is of high importance, as the situation is not resolving itself; even despite global efforts to make things better. Hunger in Africa is an issue subsequent generations(后代)will need to contend with(对付),and thus raising awareness is essential. Raise awareness about hunger
African’s are dying every single day because they don’t have the simple luxury of keeping a meal on their tables. Below are a couple ways you can help change the world and to get food to starving(挨饿的) Africans. The best thing anyone can do is to spread the word. The more people hear about the starvation in Africa, the more people are likely to do something and make a change for the better.Even if the personyoutell can’t personally make a donation, they can help spread the word just as you did to them. This is how word of mouth works – you tell someone, and they tell 6 people. Those 6 people each tell 6 people, and so on. Eventually enough people will want to make a difference and hopefully enough people have the extra funds to make a donation to starving Africans. The world has an abundance of both food and people. The problem is getting the food to the people. Donating money to Africa helps pay shipping costs for food. WAYS YOU CAN DO TO HELP STOP HUNGER IN AFRICA
