  1. Hemp Seed Oil as an Ergogenic Aid By: Aubrey Greathouse

  2. Natural Occurring Substance • Used as a raw material for cell structures in the body (Hemp seed oil: the green gold mine of essential fatty acids, 2000). • Contains a rare protein called globule edestins which is similar to human plasma (Hemp Oil, 1994).

  3. History • used in China for culinary and medicinal purposes since before 4, 000 B.C. (Hemp seed oil: the green gold mine of essential fatty acids, 2000). • One of the first plants used by people, revered for its psycho activity and calming effects (Deferne and Pate).

  4. History Continued… • Has been used as massage oils, conditioner, and lip balm for centuries (Organic hemp seed oil profile, 2010). • It was in hemp seeds that scientists first discovered enzymes (Hemp Oil, 2005).

  5. How is the Oil Obtained? • Large, dark, plump- looking seeds are squeezed in a special press and harvested in a light free and oxygen free environment stabilized with antioxidants to prevent rancidity (Ursula, Schwab, Callaway, Erkkila, Gynther, and Uusitupa, 2006).

  6. Methods of Use • One to three tablespoons is suggested for adults and half the amount for children under 16 (Hemp oil, 2005). • Pregnant or lactating women should double the amount allowing both themselves and their infants to benefit (Hemp oil, 2005).

  7. Physiological Effects of Linoleic acid (Omega 6) • energy production • growth and vitality • oxygen transfer to cells • forming the cell membrane • resisting and fighting infections • preventing allergies • functioning of the heart tissues Found at (Hemp Oil, 1994).

  8. Physiological Effects of Linolenic acid (Omega 3) • producing smooth skin • increasing stamina • speeding up the healing process • bringing calmness and peace of mind • reducing inflammation • reversing PMS • treating bacterial infections • brain development in children Found at (Hemp oil, 1994).

  9. Physiological Effects After Prolonged Use • reduces the symptoms of neuralgia, gout, rheumatism, delirium, insanity, infantile convulsions and insomnia (Hemp/ Cannabis sativa, 2005), • causes the luster in our skin, hair and eyes • lubricates and cleans the arteries • reduces effects of aging • moisturizes the skin • strengthens hair and nails Found at (Organic hemp seed oil profile, 2010).

  10. Why are studies flawed? • The United States Federal Government banned the sale of hemp seed oil and anything containing it (Hemp seed oil, 1994) and has decided not to recognize any of the varieties of hemp that are extremely low in drug content (Callaway, 2010). • Because hemp can be used as an industrial crop, it was distributed by non- medical sources and there was nothing to prevent it (Medical Hemp Seed Oil). • Hemp seed oil and it’s by- products are legally available in the United States so research is still ongoing; however, the seeds themselves are illegal (Callaway, 2010)
