Overview of Herbal garments… • In this work, an attempt is made to impart medicinal value to cotton fabrics • There is historical evidences that the great Tamil siddhar “Agastya Muni” & “Thiruvalluvar” taught the basics of medicinal cloth. • In herbal garments development, all stages of processing were done in a natural way • Curative herbal garments have been developed to cure Allergic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Asthma, Liver Disorders, Head Ache, Joint pain and Sinus Trouble/ Common cold.
Advantages of Herbal/Curative Garments • It is anti-allergic, anti-microbial and has anti-septic properties and dyes used are eco-friendly. • Provides manure to the soil & plants because the waste generated by herbal dyes would serve the same purpose • Benefit children and the future generations by stopping Air, Water and Soil pollution

Pre-Processing • The material is first wetted in cold water solution containing a natural mild detergent (10%) and left in this bath for 24 hours. • The Scouring process was carried out in the solution containing 15% natural scouring agent at the boiling temperature for an hour and washed till the material brought to neutural PH.
Natural Bleaching • The scoured cotton fabrics are exposed to direct sunlight with use of a natural grass base and animal manure, which carries out the natural bleaching process. • No chemicals are used in this process.
Herbal Extraction • Herbals are choosen according to the nature of the disease. • Then it is powdered or wet ground then boiled for selected duration depending on the hardness of the material. • Flower and fruit materials are soaked in sufficient amount of water for the required duration and then the solution was drained or filtered.
HERBAL EXTRACT APPLICATION -PADDING • Medicinally rich herbal extracts are used for the development of curative fabrics using Pad-Dry-Cure technique. • The padding bath is set with required amount of water and the herbal extract solution is poured into the padding bath and the required temperature is maintained. • The fabric is treated in the padding bath and Seven varieties of curative fabrics were developed • The process parameters varies according to the herbals used .

The herbal molecule responds to the warmth of human skin and is subsequently absorbed into the body through sweat pores , after which it gives the desired medicinal quality. The cloth has to be in direct contact with the patient’s skin to work DIFFUSION OF HERBAL MOLECULES INTO THE SKIN
Clinical Trials • The Performance of the developed curative garments were evaluated by conducting clinical trials at a Nature Cure Centre for seven weeks. • Patients with Allergic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Asthma, Liver Disorders, Head-Ache, Joint-Pain and Sinus Trouble/ Cold were selected for the trials • The patients were instructed to carry out the washing of the curative garments with natural mild detergents • Detailed feed back from the patients and the Doctor were collected every week regarding the performance of the curative garments.
Testing of Curative Fabrics • AATCC Standard tests (American Association of Textile Chemists and Colourists- Standard tests) - Agar Diffusion Test, - The Combined AATCC 100 and Hohenstein modified test method: challenge test – JIS L 1902 - Wash durability test (AATCC 124) • ISO Standard Wash fastness test - (ISO-105 C06 A1M- washing at 40°C)

Assessment of antibacterial activity in curative fabrics (Agar diffussion method)
Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of curative fabrics with agar diffusion test • The preliminary assessment of the antibacterial activity of the curative fabrics confirm that the maximum efficiency was found in the Neem-Portia treated fabric followed by Tulasi-Malabar nut and Turmeric-Neem treated fabrics. • The tests clearly confirm that the treated fabrics were efficient in controlling the gram positive organism than the gram negative organism.
Assessment of antibacterial activity of curative fabrics (Challenge test)
Evaluation of antimicrobial Activity of curative fabrics with Combined AATCC 100 And Hohenstein modified test method: Challenge test - JIS L 1902 • The results of the evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy test shows that % bacterial reduction of curative fabrics varies from 82-98% in the case of Staphylococcus aureus (representation of gram positive bacteria) and 68-82% in the case of Escherichia Coli (representation of gram positive bacteria). • The results clearly shows that the curative fabrics has got excellent antibacterial activity against the major diseases causing bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia Coli.
Evaluation of wash durability of curative fabrics (AATCC 124) • The results shows that the retention of anti microbial activity was noticed up to maximum of 12 washes in the case of Neem-Portia Tree fruit treated fabrics and followed by Turmeric – Neem treated fabrics. • The results shows that the bonding of the herbal molecules in the curative fabric structure is moderate. The above property will help the herbal molecules in the curative fabric to get diffused into the skin of the patients easily.
Evaluation of Wash Fastness of Curative Fabrics (BS EN ISO-105 CO6 A1M- WASHING AT 40°C) • The test results shows that all the above mentioned curative fabrics are having low to medium wash fastness properties. • Since the above fabrics are mainly intended for curative purpose, the low-medium fastness properties of the above fabrics will help the herbal molecules in the curative fabrics to get easily diffused in to the skin of the patient.
Evaluation of Clinical Trials • The results of clinical trials shows that the curative performance of the garments in all the cases were found to be significant. • The results shows that the maximum curative performance was noticed in the case of Euca-Head band followed by Turmo-Neem T-Shirt and Tulasi T-Shirt. • The antibacterial assessment of the treated fabrics confirmed the correlation between the curative property and its antibacterial activity. • The bio-chemical properties of the herbal extracts can be elucidated and its exact role in the mechanism of curing the disease can be well established.
CONCLUSIONS • 100% Cotton fabrics (woven / knitted) have been selected and are pre-processed without using any chemicals at any stage of the pre-processing. • The identified herbal extracts of different formulations have been derived and applied to the cotton fabrics by Pad-Dry-Cure technique. • The developed curative fabrics of seven different varieties have been tested as per AATCC Standards & ISO Standards • The antibacterial assessment of the treated fabrics confirmed the correlation between the curative property and its antibacterial activity.
Conclusions Contd….. • The bio-chemical properties of the herbal extracts can be elucidated and its exact role in the mechanism of curing the disease can be well established. • The results of the clinical trials shows that the curative. performance of the garments in all the cases were found to be significant.
