  2. Symbolism • A symbol is any object or design that stands for some other thing, person, or idea.

  3. Exaggeration • Changes in shape or size often add to the cartoons message. Cartoonists exaggerate the physical characteristics of people or things in order to make a point.

  4. Captions & Labeling • Cartoonist often label objects or people to make it clear exactly what they stand for. • Captions are also used to convey a message. Famous sayings, slogans, song lyrics, and well known phrases are also used to help the reader understand the meaning of the cartoon.

  5. Humor and Irony • Humor is important and used frequently in political cartoons. Irony is one kind of humor in which the use of words conveys a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.

  6. Analogy • Cartoonist use Analogy to compare two unlike things that share some common characteristics: Ex. The operation of a computer compared to a human brain.
