BaBar-Grid Status and Prospects

This document discusses the motivations and prospects for the BaBar-Grid project, including the need for automated job submission, the use of data distribution, and the integration of BaBar with various Grid projects such as LCG, PPDG, and EGEE.

  1. Eleonora Luppi Padova 16 ottobre 2003 BaBar-Grid Status and Prospects

  2. Motivations for BaBar-Grid • Analysis: • Having to use several Tier-A in analysis context is impractical • Need a tool to automatically submit jobs where the data and CPU cycles are available • The GridKa Tier-A will only be accessible through Grid • SP-Grid: • The Grid concept is very appealing for SP: • 23 production sites running the same executable • Data Distribution • Can be seen as a Grid application • The extraction from a Tier-A and transfer to a Tier-C of a deep-copy collection could nicely make use of Grid tools

  3. LCG (LHC Computing Grid) Makes recommendation for several projects, not only Grid LCG-1 is a grid implementation based on EDG V2.0 Aimed at being the base for a production Grid for LHC PPDG (Particle Physics Data Grid) is a DOE founded Grid project Have connection with other US projects (GriPhyn, iVDGL) SLAC is an active member of PPDG LCG includes some US Grid projects features (VDT, i.e.) EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-science and industry in Europe) New European project Not only for HEP The important point here is that there is a tendency for all the Grid projects to converge on a common set of software components Existing Grid Implementations

  4. It will be crucial to have the same kind of representation within LCG BaBar role in EGEE is still to define But we have contact with EGEE people and things should clarify later Relation with EDG / LCG and PPDG • BaBar is an official member of the EDG Work Package in charge of HEP Applications (WP8) • This is crucial for the success of BaBar-Grid • BaBar sites now appears in EDG 2.0 / LCG-1 deployment plans • BaBar has a representative in PPDG (Tim Adye) • BaBar is a very active tester of the Storage Resource Broker (SRB) which is supported by PPDG

  5. The Current BaBar-Grid Setup

  6. Present Infrastructure (1/2) • SLAC • will install LCG, but they have not yet started. • Some hesitation for security reasons • SLAC/SCS actively involved in security development for Grid (PPDG and LCG) • Karlsruhe • LCG-1 User Interface installed. The intention is to deploy LCG-1 • France • Still nothing released for users

  7. Present Infrastructure (2/2) • INFN • LCG-1 installed in Ferrara (Grid.it) • Genius interface developed under EDG 1.4.x is migrating to new release • UK • EDG 2.x installed. • RB at Imperial College installed and accessible by BaBar • RAL resource opened to BaBar • Imperial College will have a LCG-1 RB soon • Replica Catalog at Manchester?

  8. BaBarGrid Analysis • Successful test using EDG v 1.4.x • Prepare executable locally • Copy executable to SE and register to RC • Prepare JDL to select CE with a close SE where the executable is available • Copy executable to WN • Run and produce ntuple • Copy ntuple to close SE and register to RC • The aim is to reproduce this procedure using LCG-1

  9. BaBarGrid SP • MC production system ported to LCG-1 • SP rpm will be officially distributed with LCG-1 (presently already included in Grid.it ) • First tests started ( in Ferrara, Padova, Legnaro, Milano, Trieste, Napoli, Bologna, Bari and Catania). • Note: only Ferrara is a BaBarGrid site! • Genius is migrating to the new release with a basic set of services for MC (see Enrica)

  10. 02/2004: LCG-1 deployed at SLAC We need to setup an important milestone on the Grid integration into the BaBar book-keeping system but we need more discussion in the group Some of these milestones are highly correlated with the availability, the usability and the stability of LCG-1 which is independent from BaBar Future Major Milestones (from IFC Meeting June 27, 2003 - DB) • 07/2003: SP grid test runs at GridKa, Naples, Padova, Imperial College and Bristol • 09/2003: Virtual Smart Card system (security component) installed at SLAC • 12/2003: SP Grid in production in a few sites • 01/2004: A full scale analysis running on Grid and producing physics results (~10000 8 hour CPU jobs producing ~500 GB of output) • Probably not enough to demonstrate that we have reached production quality on Grid

  11. Milestones, Opinions & Wishes • Genius running under LCG-1 with a (almost) complete set of services • SP Grid in production in other Italian sites where Babar & Grid are present • Objectivity accessible in more sites then Ferrara! • BaBar RB installed at Ferrara (it depends also on a national agreement) • RC usable and integrated with the experiment bookkeeping • BaBar resources for actual production ……
