Reserving Materials Online at the HRSB Library: A step-by-step guide
This PowerPoint presentation will show you how to reserve materials at the HRSB Library using our online catalogue. This is a step-by-step walk through the process. It is not an interactive presentation. The only links that work are the underlined ones; the email addresses and the one which takes you to our catalogue (on the next slide). The remainder of the slides show you which screens will pop up when you follow the instructions.
Our online catalogue is found at http://library.hrsb.ns.ca/imm. Why not add this site to your computer favourites list, if you haven’t already?
Enter your Patron ID and Password(if you don’t have either, email us libraryorders@hrsb.ns.ca and we will provide you with both).
Some personal information will come up. Please make sure it is correct. While you are here, you can find out what you have out now and when it is due (Loan), what you have borrowed in the past (Loan History), if there are any items on reserve for you (Reserve) and if you have any lost materials (Fine). We do not charge any fines, however, we happily accept replacement copies (in good condition) and/or we gratefully accept financial contributions which help defray the cost of buying replacement copies.
Enter your search term (I have chosen “orchestra”), press the computer Enter key. Insignia will now perform a “keyword” search. Try to keep your search term as narrow as possible. For instance, “Canada” is a little broad, “Canada provinces” might work better.
I’m going to digress. If you don’t wish to do that right now, just click ahead to slide #16 (this is slide #9).
If you are only looking for one specific item and you know the title, use a “Title” search instead. For example, I would like to reserve a book I have used before, one that I am pretty certain is called “Dinosaurs”. If I do a keyword search using “dinosaurs”, I will get 80+ items. However, if I use a “Title” search, that narrows the field down to 6 items.
You can also do something very similar if you want to do an author study. Illustration courtesy of Barbara Reid Instead of using a Keyword or Title search, you can do an Author search. Just remember that the author’s name should be entered last name first (ie. Reid, Barbara). That will bring up all the materials we have written by that author. You can also do a Keyword search, using the author’s name. That should bring up pretty much everything we have by and also about that author.
If you have done this, you will notice that we also have French materials authored by Barbara Reid.
If you want French language materials only (for example), you will need to use the Advanced Search feature.
And, under “Language”, select “French”. You will also have to re-enter the search term “reid, barbara” . Then enter “Search”
Now, with any luck, you will have a list of French books only, with the Keyword “reid, barbara”.
Insignia found 6 items, sorted in alphabetical order by title, using the word “orchestra”.
Lucky me. When I check in the right hand column (Copies), it looks like there is at least one available copy of each item.
Click on the box(es) of the items you want. If you want more than one copy, check to see how many are available (RH column) and put the number in the QTY column. I have entered 2 different items, 3 copies of “Berlioz…” and 2 of “Orchestranimals”. Then click on “Book Items”.
This screen pops up. It needs a bit of explanation. You can click on each title to find out the following information: -the loan period (in green) (8 weeks for most books) -how many copies are available—red number (there are 3 copies of Berlioz available)
Today’s date will automatically come up. Click on the date that you want us to send the item (not when you want it to arrive—we can’t be sure when that will be). I have selected Dec. 1st. The due date will automatically adjust. Click on the “Book Item(s)” button. This will reserve the first title on your list.
You then have to click on each of the titles you would like to reserve and book them individually (changing the date, if necessary). That will take you to this screen. If you want to cancel any of the items, click in the box to the left of the title, then click on “Cancel Request”. Otherwise, you’re finished – your request has been entered in the database and will be automatically displayed to staff on the shipping date requested. You can now do another search, check your account again and/or log out.
