  14. Fourth Grade Units • Theories of Intelligence (LA) • State Mystery Boxes (LA) • Word Masters (LA) • Math Quest (M) • Journey Inside the Computer (M) • District Math Competition (M) • Transformational Geometry (M)

  15. Example Math Quest Problem Strategy: Work Backwards A man owns one-half a business. He sells one-fourth of his holdings for $12,500. What was the value of the business? How to solve: By starting with the last information, this problem can be solved without needing any knowledge of algebra. If $12,500 is one-fourth of what he owns, then add $12,500 4 times (or multiply by 4) to find the total amount of the man’s holdings. That amount is $50,000. The problem also told us that the man’s holdings are ½ of the businesses value. To solve we need to double the holding amount of $50,000 to get an answer of $100,000.

  16. Math Quest Written Explanations • 1st Sentence: What information was needed to solve the problem • Body Sentences: Each step taken to solve the problem including what was done and why it was done that wayGuess and Check: after explaining the first 3 guesses, students combine the remaining guesses into one sentence • Conclusion Sentence: The answer and any checks made to determine accuracy NOT: This is what I did to find my answer!

  17. Fifth Grade Units • Editorial Cartoons (LA) • Brain Physiology/Metacognition (LA) • Strategy Games (LA) • Word Masters (LA) • Great Mathematicians (M) • Hands-On Equations (M) • District Math Competition (M)

  18. Example Hands-On Equations Problems Verbal Problem Level I Shirley bought three equally priced notebooks and a $5 pen for $17. How much was each notebook. How to solve: Using the balance place 3 blue pawns on the left side to represent the notebooks. Add a red 5 cube to represent the cost of the pen. On the right side of the balance place a 10 and 7 cube to represent the total. Remove 5 from both sides to find that 3x=12 and x=4. Level I 2(x+3)=10 Level II 4x –x=15 Level III 4x-2(x+1)=2x+10

  19. Word Masters • District Competition • 3 Challenges: December, February, April • 25 vocabulary words to learn and practice using in an analogy format i.e. calm : serene :: upset : agitated • Completion of 8-15 analogies correctly is considered modest success.
