What Is in the Doula Bag - Life in the Trenches of a Trained Doula Rachel Leavitt
Let's get one thing straight. The most important thing a trained doula can bring with her to a birth is herself. The caring, nurturing support along with a solid background in normal physiological birth and comfort measures that a trained doula brings to the birth room can not be replaced by the fanciest gadget in the world.
Valuable tools that a doula should bring: • Essential oils - usefulto help relax, motivate, uplift, and get rid of nausea and it also help with pain and strengthening contractions. • Massage tools (but hands on massage is much better • Penny Simkin's book, Labor Progress- contains good information in that book that I like to look up during a birth • Bag of Depends - use these for when the water breaks
Other small things that are nice to have on hand include: • Hair bands to keep moms hair out of her face • Heat packs or ice packs • Gum • Easily digested food like crackers • Sports drinks • Small fans
