“Speak of the North” By Charlotte Bronte
Learning Target • Analyzing mood in a poem • TSWBAT determine mood in a poem and compare it to mood in a story.
Mood • The overall feeling that is created in the story. • Mood is the atmosphere created by the setting, the word choices, and the actions of people and characters in it. It also relates to how the reader emotionally responds to these elements like sadness for a tragedy. • Mood can usually be described with adjectives. Words like terrified, excited, and angered.
“Speak of the North” Speak of the North! A lonely moor Silent and dark and trackless swells, The waves of some wild streamlet pour Hurriedly through its ferny dells. Profoundly still the twilight air, Lifeless the landscape; so we deem Till like a phantom gliding near A stag bends down to drink the stream And far away a mountain zone, A cold, white waste of snow-drifts lies, And one star, large and soft and lone, Silently lights the unclouded skies. Respond in your notes: • What is the poem about? (What is the north Bronte is speaking about?) • Describe the mood. • How can you compare this to the mood of “The Monkey’s Paw?” • Would the mood change if this poem was set in The Great Plains, American Southwest, etc.? Why or why not?
