A little about . . . the story . . . the history . . . and . . . the future we build together -
1845, Henry Barnard appointed Rhode Island’s first Commissioner of Pubic Schools. • May 1854, Rhode Island State Normal School established. • Its mission: • To engage in educational research • To be at the forefront of pedagogical philosophy and practice • To prepare expert educators
The Normal School was built in 1898 in Providence across from the Rhode Island State House …on the site of what is now Providence Place Mall! In 1898, an “Observation School” opened in the Normal School
1920 - • The name of the Normal School was changed to Rhode Island College of Education (R.I.C.E.) • The name of the Observation School was changed to the Henry Barnard School in honor of the state’s first public school Commissioner. • 1928 - • Henry Barnard School was a kindergarten through Grade 9 (Junior High) school.
Henry Barnard’s master teachers,administrators, and R.I.C.E.’s professorsof education strove to research,analyze, and develop new curriculumand methods of educational practice.They disseminated deeper understandings of child development and best educational practice.They had strong opinions and strong voices that impacted public education in Rhode Island and in the United States.

1958 -1959 academic year : Rhode Island College of Education and Henry Barnard School move to Mount Pleasant location. 1959: Renamed Rhode Island College. 1960’s : Normal School Building on Francis Street used, with factory on Promenade Street, as the first location of the new Rhode Island Junior College –(RIJC) – Known now as the Community College of Rhode Island – (CCRI).
Presently - Henry Barnard Laboratory School is a Pre-School through Grade 5 school
Functions of a Laboratory School: Clinical Teaching Experience Research. Experimentation Curriculum Development. Staff Development.
2011-2012 Student Population: 284 students and their families members of the Barnard learning community. Students from Southern Massachusetts are often members of the student body. Students in all of Rhode Island’s 39 cities and towns are eligible to attend HBS. One of the most diverse student bodies in Rhode Island’s elementary schools.
2011 – 2012 Academic Year Present configuration of classrooms: 2 Pre-School Classrooms 3 Kindergartens 2 Classroom for each Elementary Grade (1 -5)
Specialist Classes All students participate in: Art Library Music Physical Education Spanish Technology Education
