Understanding Standards Event: Advanced Higher Geography

This event aims to support practitioners in their understanding of national standards in relation to Advanced Higher Geography. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with the examining team, receive guidance on marking, and practice marking scripts. The event also includes professional discussions and workshops on the question paper and folio components.

Aims of the Day To support practitioners in their understanding of national standards in relation to Advanced Higher Geographyby: • providing an opportunity to meet with some of the Advanced Higher examining team • providing guidance and support on marking to standard • illustrating marking on each Question Paper question and each component of the Folio • providing opportunity to mark practice scripts with the support of the team • engaging in professional discussion

  4. Workshop 1: Question Paper

  5. Advanced Higher Question Paper Purpose To demonstrate a breadth of knowledge and understanding from ACROSS the Advanced Higher Course in terms of a wide range of geographical methods, techniques and skills within appropriate contexts. Format The Question Paper will always have a constant mark allocation in terms of Mapping skill, Gathering/Processing Skills/Data Handling skills. HOWEVER, questions may focus individually on each of these or it may vary (see Course/Unit Support Notes page 44 for possible variations) There will be no optional questions ie candidates must answer all questions in the Question Paper.

  6. Workshop 1:Question Paper Use the Advanced Higher Question Paper and the Marking Instructions to mark the candidate evidence in your pack. You have been given 2 pieces of evidence for each question. You should work in groups and review your marks collegiately before the feedback/discussion session.

  7. Workshop 2: Folio(Issue) • For this part of the Advanced Higher Course assessment candidates are required to demonstrate the ability to: • undertake independent and detailed research of a current geographical issue • justify their choice of issue • summarise a wide range of viewpoints on the issue • critically evaluate the viewpoints • reach a reasoned conclusion(s)

  8. Workshop 2:Folio (Issue) Use the Advanced Higher Folio (Issue) and the Marking Instructions to mark the candidate evidence in your pack. You should work in groups and review your marks collegiately

Introduction to Workshop 3: Folio (Study) • For this part of the Advanced Higher Course assessment candidates are required to demonstrate the ability to: • undertake detailed research of a complex geographical topic (using both primary and secondary sources) • justify their choice of topic • show sound geographical knowledge & understanding of the topic • gather, process, analyse & evaluate data • report and conclude findings appropriately

  10. 2016 Folio and Marking Instructions Issue (40 marks = 26.7% final award) Study (60 marks = 40% final award) [ Question Paper 50 marks = 33.3% final award ] Marking Instructions – different from ‘old’ Advanced Higher. Holistic and flexible still key to marking. ‘candidates can structure their evidence in a variety of ways and may also demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understanding in a variety of ways and at different points in their evidence’
