Pathways of Today for Leaders of TomorrowYouth Presentation Circle of Care Grantee Meeting August 23, 2007 Denver, Colorado
What we think Youth Guided Services Means • Service Providers should: • Be passionate about working with youth • Get to know the person • Be interested in the individual • Have knowledge of what they’re talking about • Know and understand what your talking about • Structure/Youth involvement: rights, being involved with the planning,
Challenges • Limited cultural activities • Loss of Identity • Abuse of trust by adults and youth (lack of opportunity to show we can be trusted) • Finding success • Pressure: peers, adults, yourself, and elders • Lack of services (med/behavioral health)
What will help get youth involved • Take pictures of Circles of Care events and youth can share experiences with their peers • Find a location that is appealing to youth • Partner with other services/programs (Ex.: Indian Ed, Boys & Girls Town Nat’l Hotline, Powwows) • Share program information with the youth • Tell youth what to expect at the meetings, and let them know who the speakers are • Youth want to hear from their peers
Making it Better • Provide transportation • Change the approach when working with us Positive opportunities Provide college information Help us socialize Opportunities to travel so we can meet new people
What are Leaders • Strong minded • Honest • Likes to explore new things • Likes to try new things • Responsible
