Primary and Secondary Sources • Primary Sources are ORIGINAL materials. • ORIGINAL writings, ORIGINAL items, quotes, autobiography. Anything that is original is a PRIMARY SOURCE.
Primary Sources • ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS - Diaries, speeches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, news film footage, autobiographies, official records • CREATIVE WORKS: Poetry, drama, novels, music, art • RELICS OR ARTIFACTS: Pottery, furniture, clothing, buildings
Examples of Primary Sources • Diary of Anne Frank - Experiences of a Jewish family during WWII • A journal article reporting NEW research or findings • Weavings and pottery - Native American history • Plato's Republic - Women in Ancient Greece
Primary and Secondary Sources • Secondary Sources are COPIES. They are not originals.
Secondary Sources • PUBLICATIONS: Textbooks, magazine articles, criticisms, commentaries, encyclopedias
Examples of Secondary Sources • A journal/magazine article which interprets or reviews previous findings • A history textbook • A book about the effects of WWI • A replica of a Civil War outfit
Tertiary Sources • These sources contain both PRIMARY and SECONDARY sources.
For example: A Soldier's Civil War uniform, only the buttons are replicas because the originals could not be found. This is a TERTIARY Source because the uniform is authentic (original) but the buttons are copies. Get it?? Tertiary Sources
Another example: A piece of writing that contains quotes from eye witnesses and second hand knowledge of information from stories passed down from one generation to the next. This is a TERTIARY Source because the quotes and eye witnesses are considered primary sources, but the stories that are second hand are considered secondary sources. It is all written in one article, so it is a TERTIARY source. Get it?? Tertiary Sources
Now it's your turn... On a piece of paper, write down if the source is PRIMARY or SECONDARY. Ready????
