3. We go to a child care center, but I call it school. It is very important to me that Eli gets good care. My Mama, Dada, and I love her very much. C-5.01 - Infant care

4. Hand washing • Feeding • Diapering 4. Naptime There are four step-by-step procedures you need to be able to apply to work with Eli. Can you help me name them? C-5.01 - Infant care

6. When it is time for a change, or when it is time for a feeding, what do you as E-I’s caregiver need to do? This a very important procedure. Wash Your Hands C-5.01 - Infant care

7. BEFORE FEEDING OR DIAPERING • Lather and scrub • Rub for 15 seconds • Wash all areas of hands front and back • Rinse for 10 seconds • Dry with paper towel or drying device • Turn off faucet with paper towel I am watching you. 8. Hand Washing when Diapering • Provide liquid soap and tempered water. 2. Rub hands vigorously with soap and tempered water for 15 seconds. 3. Wash all areas of the hand; include the backs of the hands, palms, wrists, under fingernails and between fingers. C-5.01 - Infant care

9. Hand Washing when Diapering 4.Rinse for 10 seconds. • Dry hands with a paper towel or other hand-drying device. • Turn off faucet with a paper towel or other method without contaminating hands. C-5.01 - Infant care

11. The first thing you do when Mama drops E-I off at school with her bottles is? • Immediately label and refrigerate breast or formula bottles of milk. C-5.01 - Infant care

12. Time for step 2! What is it? I will give you a hint. You forgot to put the milk in the refrigerator. What do you do? 2. Discard any formula or breast milk that has not been refrigerated for two hours. C-5.01 - Infant care

13. Step 3 My sister does not like her milk cold so….. 3. Remove bottle from refrigerator and run warm water over the bottle to bring to room temperature. C-5.01 - Infant care

14. My Aunt Billie knows how important the next steps are. She loves E-I so it is easy for her to do this. Have you guessed what the next 2 steps are? • Watch for signs of fullness. • Crying in response to bottle • Turning head away • Closing mouth tightly • Pushing away bottle/breast • Stopping sucking 4. Hold baby during bottle feeding. When baby gets bigger and can hold his/her own bottle, it’s okay to put baby in an age-appropriate seating device and give bottle. C-5.01 - Infant care

15. I am going to be really mad if you don’t do this last step. I do not want E-I to get sick! Okay, name it. 7. After one hour, discard any used formula left in the bottle. C-5.01 - Infant care

16. There is a strange smell in this school and it is time for a new procedure. It is the last thing you need to do for E-I. Hint! This procedure is done on demand, not on a schedule. Did you guess? Diapering C-5.01 - Infant care

19. Hello, caregivers. What do you think you should do first and second? 1. Gather supplies before placing child on diapering surface 2. Don disposable gloves if needed C-5.01 - Infant care

20. Use disposable towelette or moistened paper towel • to clean child, wiping front to back. • Dispose of of gloves, if used, soiled towelettes, and diaper in a plastic-lined, covered receptacle C-5.01 - Infant care

21. Be safe and sanitary. 5. Wipe hands with disposable towelette or moistened paper towel. C-5.01 - Infant care

22. 6. Slide a clean diaper under the child, applying diapering products if needed, using facial or toilet paper, discarding tissue in a plastic-lined, covered receptacle. C-5.01 - Infant care

23. Expose of all soiled items in a plastic lined trashcan. Take Note C-5.01 - Infant care

24. Diapering - Note Avoid baby powder, ointments, and other products unless instructed in writing by a parent. If ingested, baby powder can harm the lungs of an infant. C-5.01 - Infant care

25. Take Note Check for signs of diaper rash. If needed, and if you have written parent permission, apply ointment. C-5.01 - Infant care

26. 7. Fasten diaper and place clothing on child. C-5.01 - Infant care

27. Last steps for diapering. What are they? 8. Wash child’s hands in accordance with Rule .2803. If child is unable to support his/her head, clean the child’s hands with a disposable towelette or moistened paper towel, then dry the childes hands and return the child to a supervised area. 9. Spray entire diapering surface with detergent solution and wipe clean; use disposable paper towels. 10. Spray diapering surface with disinfecting solution and allow to remain on surface two minutes or as specified by the manufacturer, or air-dry. 11. Wash hands in accordance with Rule .2803, even if disposable gloves are used by the caregiver. C-5.01 - Infant care

30. Naptime is like having a garden. There are some procedures you have to follow so it will grow and bear fruit. First, you have to find out from the parents what their preferences are for baby’s naptimes. Does E-I take a nap at home? What time does E-I go to bed? Tonight, Mama and Dada are taking us out to eat, so they what us both to take a nap. Click your mouse and check out the first procedure for naptimes. 1. Schedule naps with parent preferences in mind. 31. Remember Aunt Billie held E-I and rocked her to sleep in a nice chair like mine. If E-I is excited and needs to calm down to get sleepy, sometimes she reads her a story or plays soft music first. So, what are these nextsteps? • Use music and stories to calm infants before naptime. • If feeding is needed before naptime, hold infants to feed them their pre-nap bottles. C-5.01 - Infant care

32. After she falls to sleep what are you going to do with her? Should you leave her on the couch? 3. Put infant in crib. For safety reasons, it’s never okay to prop an infant’s bottle or give it to them while they are lying down. C-5.01 - Infant care

33. 4. To reduce risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), place infant on his/her back in a crib with a firm mattress, avoiding use of fluffy animals, pillows, and other objects in the crib. Only place a child in an alternative sleep position if a physician’s recommendation for a sleep position waiver is on file in the center. C-5.01 - Infant care
