WHO I RESPECT I respect my 5th great grandfather, John tanner. Not a lot of people know him, and what sacrifices he made. He lived in Rhode Island, and he had a nasty disease on his leg. He fashioned himself a wheelchair, since the pain was unbearable. When missionaries came to his house, he wanted to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. But he couldn’t be baptized because of his leg. The missionaries blessed him, and he was able to walk. Later on, he felt that he needed to go to Kirtland, Ohio ASAP. He sold his farm, house, and his island. They took every thing they had, and went to Kirtland with a hand cart. There he met Joseph smith, the Prophet of the church. Apparently the church was in debt, and if they didn’t pay, the bank would take the temple out of their possession. John Tanner came just in time, and loaned the church I think $30,000. Joseph Smith respected him and called him Father Tanner(in our church we usually call each other by Brother/Sister What-ever-their-last-name-is). His family struggled to live with no money and so many children. One died, that I know of. Then, he was called on a mission, and went to Joseph Smith, with they loan paper in his hand. “I am forever in your debt,” said Joseph Smith. “the only debt you have is gratitude,” He replied, as he was tearing up the loan letter for at least $30,000!(I think it was that much) John Tanner respected Joseph Smith and the church, and many respected him back. I am proud to be related to such a man, and I respect his hard decision. There are many related to him, though. 183 grandchildren. I respect him with all of my heart.
