Aboriginal workforce INCREASING THE NUMBER OF ABORIGINAL MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WILL HELP IDENTIFY THE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES OF ABORIGINAL FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES AND WHAT IS NEEDED TO PROVIDE CULTURALLY SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE SERVICE.
NSW Aboriginal mental health professional traineeship program Walk Together, Learn Together, Work Together A Practical Guide for the Training of Aboriginal Mental Health Professionals in New South Wales
Manager of Aboriginal mental health service and Aboriginal workforce ROLE: • Line manager and coordination of Aboriginal MH Traineeships, • Line manger and coordination of the HNE district Aboriginal Allied health Aboriginal Cadetships, • Direct report to directors of MHS on Aboriginal MHS&W, provide Clinical leadership to increase access and sustainability, development of partnerships with ACCHS, consult clinically on complex clients, staff education, clinical and cultural supervision, performance management, mediation and support service for Aboriginal trainees, cadets and MH clinicians. Research and quality projects in improving CTG initiatives. • Development of career pathways for Aboriginal people and increase a culturally competent MH workforce. Identifying and Targeting clinical positions-providing culturally appropriate pathways for recruitment and positions descriptions.
CLINICAL SUPERVISOR : • It is the clinical supervisors role to catch up with trainee on weekly basis to monitor clinical development, safe practice and facilitate reflective thinking. This will be monitored in clinical portfolio. Clinical supervisors are in each trainee area.
CULTURAL MENTOR: • Providing Aboriginal cultural support • Orientating the trainee to the culture of the placement organisation and the Aboriginal support network • Regularly meeting with each trainee during work placement and academic year to assist in solving any issues that may arise
PRECEPTOR : • Monitor portfolio and workload requirements spreadsheet for all trainees. • Trainees are to submit their work to preceptor and will discuss at monthly meetings. • Preceptor to stay in touch with clinical supervisors to determine ongoing development and competency.
SERVICE MANAGERS OF EACH CLUSTER • The SM of each cluster will be kept up to date of trainees progress through Manager of mental health service and workforce reports prior to 6 monthly debrief meetings with trainees team as per model.
