  2. Definition • A waste audit is a measurement of the amount of garbage.

  3. Why it’s Important • Excellent way to see if your recycling plan is succeeding and to give your group an idea of how much waste is being produced. • Creates a target for improvement

  4. Step 1 • Arrange the waste audit with your custodial staff • Ask them to put in CLEAR bags TWO nights before your audit • Sunday night April 15th • Collect all waste from a 24hr period in CLEAR bags • Collection Monday night April 16th

  5. Step 2 • Conduct a Visual Garbage audit of the contents of all the clear bags from the 24 hour period. • Weigh EACH bag and record the weight on the chart

  7. Step 3 • Calculate your totals for each column • Calculate your TOTAL waste per student per year • Ours was 27lbs per student per year this year • In 2010 it was 39lbs per student per year.

  8. Step 4 • Make a Waste Minimization Action Plan • Identify the most common items found in the waste • Brainstorm ways to reduce the amount of these items in the garbage • Record your strategies in the Waste Minimization Action Plan
