METHODS OF HERBICIDE APPLICATION By Georgia Huff Forestry Science I Modified by Georgia Agricultural Education Curriculum Office July, 2002
OBJECTIVES: • Describe aerial herbicide application. • Describe ground herbicide application. • Describe foliar spray application. • Describe cut surface treatment. • Demonstrate cut surface treatment. • Solve herbicide calibration problems.
MENTAL SET: • What is an undesirable species? • How do we control or get rid of it? • What are some methods of control? • Why is safety so important?
METHODS OF HERBICIDE APPLICATION: • Aerial • Applied by helicopters • Excellent for large areas • Ground • Most precise • Good for small/sensitive areas • Backpack Foliar Sprays • Adaptable for small landowners
CUT SURFACE TREATMENTS: • Widely used method for killing unwanted trees during site preparation • Used in combination with other methods
TYPES OF CUT SURFACE TREATMENTS: • Tree Injection • Basal Bark Treatment • Frill or Girdle Treatment • Hack and Squirt • Cut Stump Treatment
Key points to cut surface treatments: • Follow the labeled rates! • Calibration is important! • Cuts should be made in the form of a cup. • Best applied to trees greater than 2” DBH. • Adaptable to small landowners. • Low equipment costs. • Intensive labor requirements.
REVIEW: • What is an undesirable species? • What is a weed? • What is green junk? • What are two ways to control hardwoods? • What are some methods of herbicide application? • SAFETY FIRST!!!
