Historic Roots of Management • When war broke out in the 1960s, the world felt compelled to better understand the nature of humanity.
Introduction of Maslow • Name : Abraham Maslow(1908–1970) • AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGIST, AUTHOR • UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, PhD, 1934
Contribution Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs – a humanistic psychological approach.
Humanistic Psychology • The present is the most significant aspect of someone. As a results humanists emphasize the here and now instead of examining the past or attempting to predict the future. • To be mentally healthy, individuals must take personal responsibility for their actions, regardless if those actions are positive or negative.
Humanistic Psychology • Every person is inherently worthy. Any negative actions do not cancel out their value as a person. • The ultimate goal of living is to attain personal growth and understanding. Through constant self-improvement and self-understanding can an individual ever be truly happy.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs • First four needs are called “deficiency needs” or “D- needs” : individual don’t feel anything if they are met , but anxious if they are not met. • Beyond “D-needs” is “growth needs” or “B-needs”. The needs when fulfilled they don’t go away, rather they motivate further.
Self-actualization Theory In his book, The Farther Reaches of Human Nature Maslow has described eight ways in which individuals self-actualize. • Concentration • Growth Choices • Self-awareness • Honesty • Judgment • Self-development • Peak Experiences • Lack of Ego Defenses
Strength of Maslow’s theory • The humanistictheory integrate with other schools of thought. A number of therapists adopt humanistic undertones when working with their clients.
Weaknessof Maslow’s theory • As per Maslow very few people can attain self actualization level. It does not sound like a science to many people. • Humanistic theory focus on the positive, instead of negative. This leaves very few tests upon which to build the case of Humanism. • Humanistic theory is unable to help people with severe personality or mental health disorders.
Maslow's Theory Z • It presupposes that people, once having reached a level of economic security, strive for a life steeped in values. • Expecting to be well paid, generation also believes they are entitled to a job "that fun, a job that's cool, a job that lets them discover who they really are." Work is not about paying the rent anymore - it's about self-fulfillment.
