After A Level To do well in the Sector you will need: Good qualifications Good personal attributes Each are presented on the following pages
Qualifications We have roles for all skills not just those associated directly with designing or making products Roles for ICT, finance, human resources are all needed also, but in smaller numbers So A level subjects such as Business Studies, languages, History, Geography may be useful for Sector
Qualifications No matter the role though, we will need you to have good grades in the subjects, at least Grade C On the next page are details for those roles more related to designing and making products
Qualifications Ideally you should have A level’s in any of the following subjects: Maths/Further Maths Physics Chemistry ICT Design & Technology Vocational related* • - may or may not be offered at your High School or in conjunction with IOM College • eg. National Certificate in Engineering (equivalent to 2 A levels)
Personalattributes The Sector is very disciplined as you are invariably dealing with peoples safety or well being You therefore need to be quite a disciplined person yourself - Good timekeeping - Reliable - Produce quality work - Pride/care
Personal attributes These are also important: Positive attitude Presentable Flexible Good communicator Diligent Enthusiastic Inquisitive
After A Level So you need a good balance of qualifications and personal attributes If you have the qualifications, the personal attributes and a desire to be involved in a thriving Sector, then the options are detailed on the next pages
After A Level There is no best path into the Sector. A level’s are as welcome as a degree – we need people with all types of qualifications to satisfy all the roles across the Sector The path in is really down to you - what interests you, and what you are best at
After A Level The IOM College and UK Universities have detailed information available on all courses, including entry requirements in prospectus’
Paths AS/A levels Secondary School or IOM College Degree IOM College or UK University 2 years 2 - 4 years National Diploma HNC/HND 3 days/week IOM College 1 day/week DTI Training Centre (year 1) 1 day/week study time IOM College (Full or part time) Employed in Company (and then developed further as needed) 2 years Upto 3 years (Equivalent to 2 A levels) Year First Diploma 11 3 days/week IOM College 2 days/week study time 1 year (Equivalent to 4 GCSE’s) Apprenticeship 4 days/week Company 1 day/week IOM College [Employed by Company] 3 or 4 years The job and level accepted for within the Company entirely depends on qualifications attained and your personal attributes NVQ Trainee 3 wks Foundation Course @ DTI Training Ctr then 5 days/week Company [Employed by Company] upto 3 years (NVQ 3)
Paths AS/A levels Secondary School or IOM College Degree IOM College or UK University 2 years 2 - 4 years Degree subjects: There are a huge range of Engineering and manufacturing related Degrees available. A degree such as Mechanical Engineering may give you the widest scope for employment as it covers many engineering related subjects Employed in Company (and then developed further as needed) Year 11
Paths AS/A levels Secondary School or IOM College Degree IOM College or UK University 2 years 2 - 4 years Degree subjects: There are some Degrees available at the IOM College – see prospectus Other Degrees are available in the UK If you need guidance on Degree selections, talk to some of the Companies to see what they require Employed in Company (and then developed further as needed) Year 11
Paths AS/A levels Secondary School or IOM College Degree IOM College or UK University 2 years 2 - 4 years Employed in Company (and then developed further as needed) Depending upon vacancies available, you may be able to gain entry into a Company with A levels Gaining a degree, whilst it would not guarantee entry any more than A levels, would probably open up more opportunities and position levels within Companies Year 11
