characteristic • The word 'Jaundice' is derived from the French word 'Jaune' meaning yellow. • Jaundice is the yellowish discolouration of the skin caused by an increase of bilirubin in the blood. • Neonatal jaundice is jaundice that occurs within the first month of baby's life. • It is a very common and occurs in 50% of babies in the first week of life

Epidemiology ~ March 03,2009 : General Hosp.Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: 332 newborns : 281 full term 51 premature ~ In full term newborns : 80% ~In preterm newborns : 20% ~Severe cases in West Malaysia ~Higher incidence : G6PD deficiency, phy jaundice, abnormal Hb. ~None need blood transfusion.
Etiology / Causes??? • Blood ~High RBC volume ~abnormal hb, shape & function ~ Blood group mismatch - ABO and Rh incompatibility • Liver ~ not adequately mature to process the the excess bilirubin ~ Infection (Hepatitis B) or other defects • Lack of G6PD = glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase
Extensive bruising during birth • Congenital infections (Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes Simplex, Syphilis etc) • Breast-feeding - In a poorly feeding baby, bowel movements are infrequent and this prevents the bilirubin from being excreted in the stools.
