AREA PROGRESSION RUNAWAY – FOUNDATIONAL BUILDING BLOCK • Chain of behavior: a series of behaviors linked together in a continuous sequence by cues, delivered by the handler or from the environment, and maintained by a reinforce at the end of the chain. • Once chains are built, they are powerful in maintaining reliable behavior in complex tasks • Runaway: K9 receives cue to search (FIND); begin search; locates subject; which cues K9 to return to handler (RECALL); handler gives “show me” cue to go back to subject, subject is found (REFIND); handler reinforces K9 with reward.
Progression) Stage 1: Basic Runaway • Skill Blocks – Own Time • Discrete behaviors within the chain such as recall with cue (come), trained final response with cue (up/spin etc), refind with cue (show me) • Functional obedience • Functional agility • Scent/Search games • Reward system • Success Criteria • Runaways 100% reliability 3 sets of 3 • Progression plan co-created wt Peer Coach • Fluency – precision, latency and speed • Works distractions • Basic obedience solid • Reliable final trained response • Effective reinforcement of behavior • Subject loyalty • Varying environments • Diverse subjects • Area Progression/SAR Time • Runaway chain of behavior • Different distance • Visual/non-visual • Engaging nose/using wind • One variable at a time • Environmental variety • Subject variety
Progression) Sample Plan: Goal/Why Are You Doing This: Contribute in a meaningful way to my community while leveraging my love for the outdoors and K9s • Objective (long-term): Become an next operational area team next within the next 24 months Challenges: Focus and speed (tinkers around and sniffs) Medium drive. Build excitement. More effective system of reinforcement. Shy of strangers. Reduce stress. • Results (3 months): Move from Stage 1 to Stage 2 (see Progression Plan for Criteria): • 100 percent reliable on runaway chain of behavior at distances of 100 feet, in varied terrain and subjects. • Solid functional obedience • Etc • Actions (recurring and one-time) • Train bi-weekly on unofficials with K9 members • Practice obedience skills on daily basis, short sessions, high reinforcement • Practice final trained response on daily basis until 100 percent reliable and integrate into runaway • Complete Obedience 101 and enroll in Obedience 102 • Read Scent and the Scenting Dog • Spend an hour a week reviewing documents on web site • Connect with my Peer Coach at least bi-weekly to discuss progress, revise plan as needed • Complete 30 percent of field certification requirements • Register for WASAR Conference
Progression) Plan Evaluation: This team will continue to train at Stage 1 during Q2 until success criteria for Stage 1 are achieved • Skill Blocks – Own Time • Discrete behaviors within the chain such as recall with cue (come), trained final response with cue (up/spin etc), refind with cue (show me) • Functional obedience • Functional agility • Scent/Search games • Reward system • Evaluation • Runaways 100% reliability 3 sets of 3 of 100 feet • 50%. • Distractions – much improved, different environments OK • Functional obedience is solid • Final trained response is at 90% • Tug is effective reinforcer • Different subjects and shyness of strangers is no longer an issue • Area Progression/SAR Time • Runaway chain of behavior • Different distance • Visual/non-visual • Engaging nose/using wind • One variable at a time • Environmental variety • Subject variety
