ARCHIE • It is a directory service on the Internet which indexes and stores file titles for a large number of anonymous FTP sites • There are 3 possibilities • Users can run the Archie program as a client • Users can Telnet to a nearby Archie host and use keywords • Users can e-mail an Archie server and receive the response by e-mail
File Transfer Protocol • FTP is an application layer mechanism for file transfer • Users can see directories on either system and perform file management functions • Files are downloaded only to the nearest online host • Anonymous FTP means library of files are available for free use by anyone
File Transfer Protocol • The key FTP commands are: • ftp<remote.computer.name> • Open<remote.computer.name> • Cd(change directory) • Ls(list files) • Get(transfer the files to the ftp client) • Close(hang up)
GOPHER • It is an Internet service that allows the user to browse Internet resources using lists and menus • It is a three branch approach to information searching • It is fast and best way to find information resources • It runs as a client on the user’s PC
TELNET • Telnet is a terminal emulation protocol associated with TCP/IP used over Internet to contact remote host computers • It provides DEC VT-100 as basic emulation • It allows one TCP/IP system to emulate a character-based terminal on the other
VERONICA • VERONICA (Very Easy Rodent-Oriented Netwide Index to Computerized Archives) is an Internet menu-based facility that helps the user find the Gopher servers that may contain the information needed • The user browses Veronica in the same way as Gopher
WAIS • WAIS (Wide Area Information Server) is a distributer information service • It searches keywords within the files as is the case of Archie • It has a feedback mechanism which enables the users to refine their search strategy progressively
Usenet Newsgroups • It is a public bulletin board that contain large collection of opinions, comments, questions and answers from Internet • The messages are posted via e-mail • The conferences are open to the public
