Action Plan • Topic- This presentation will give students knowledge of emergency car repair. We will explore how to change a flat tire. • Audience- This presentation will be conducted as a self guided as computer show through PowerPoint. This is intended for a group of 20 junior high school students who have no previous car care knowledge. This is a broad based technology course. Students will complete presentation in school computer laboratory. • Learning objectives- Upon completion students will have knowledge to change damaged automobile tire in emergency situations.
Steps to changing the tire • Look • Retighten • Read manual • Get spare tire and tools • Lower Car • Install spare tire • Loosen tire • Remove flat tire • Jack up car
Look Now that you see you have a flat tire you should begin to plan out your actions to fix it.
Consult Owners Manual Take a look at your manual located in the dash of the car. It will provide step by step details on how to change the tire.
Spare tire and tools After reading the manual you should now get the spare tire from the vehicle, the jack and the necessary tools.
Loosen Tire Set up the tires and tools close to the flat tire. Take the lug wrench and pre-loosen the lug nuts while the car is still on the ground.
Jack Up Vehicle Reference the owners manual to find the location to put the jack for this tire. Slowly raise the car until the tire is off of the ground about 2”.
Remove Flat Tire • Using the lug nut wrench, remove the lug nuts from the vehicle. • Place them in a secure location so you will not lose them. • Remove the flat tire from the vehicle.
Installing the Spare Tire • To install the spare tire you must line up the studs with the holes in the rim of the tire. • Slide the spare into place and then • reinstall the lug nuts. • Tighten the lug nuts as much as you can while the car is in the air.
Lower the Car Slowly lower the jack to place the car back on the ground.
Retighten the Lug Nuts You must check the lug nuts to make sure they are very tight. This will ensure that the tire will not fall off car.
Now What? Spare tires are only for temporary use. Get your flat tire repaired.

In cars the spare is usually located in the trunk of vehicle. • Some vehicles have hubcaps that need to be removed. Slowly pull on the hub cap, and it will come off. • Take the lug nut wrench that you have located in the vehicle. • You should now loosen the lug nuts just a bit so you are able to remove them when the car is on the jack. • Reference the owner’s manual to find the location to put the jack for this tire. • Slowly raise the car until the tire is off of the ground about 2”. • If it seems like the jack will fall STOP! You do not want the car to fall from the jack. Reposition the jack. • Using the lug nut wrench, remove the lug nuts from the vehicle. • Place them in a secure location so you will not lose them.
