Definitions • An inability to breakdown or absorb lactose • Lactose is a milk sugar • Lactase is the enzyme that breaks down lactose (milk sugar) • When the intestine does not contain lactase then lactose intolerance can occur • It affects the stomach, intestines, and gastrointestinal system http://www.gicare.com/pated/ecdgs24.htm
History • Galen gave a perfect description on LI (lactose intolerance) in his warning about milk • They finally took LI seriously when 2 babies were reported to have it from birth which is very rare
Statistics • It affects everyone, doesn’t matter age, gender or race certain races are affected more then others • Affects adults more then children • babies being affected are very rare • Approximately 70% of the world’s population is thought to have low levels of lactase in there small intestine lining • 30% of American’s have some degree of lactose intolerance
Causes • Don’t produce enough lactase (enzyme) • Could get it if there is a family history of enzyme-lactase deficiency
Symptoms In Children: • Vomiting (sometimes) • Slow weight gain, growth and development • Foamy diarrhea along with a diaper rash In Adults: • Rumbling abdominal sounds and cramps • Diarrhea • Gas • Bloating • Nausea http://www.gicare.com/pated/ecdgs24.htm
Diagnosis Can be determined that someone has lactose intolerance with these: • With family history • Hydrogen breath test • Stool acidity • Home-do-it-yourself test Three possible types of lactose intolerance • Primary lactose most common • Secondary lactose • Congenital lactose intolerance extremely rare
Treatment • To avoid lactose depending on level of lactose intolerance • Lactose pills that produces lactase (lactase pills) • Read labels to make sure products don’t have milk sugar • Could develop calcium deficiency but it’s rare
