RFID Mike Treon CPSC 310
What is RFID? • Radio Frequency Identification • Wireless link to transmit data and collect stored information. (EPC) • Allows for contact-less identification of people, animals, or objects.
How RFID works • Readers & Tags • Readers: Produce low-level magnetic field. • Tags: Antenna, Integrated Circuit (IC) • Power from magnetic field allows the card to transmit the information to the reader.
More on tags • Antenna, Chip, Core, Battery. • Passive and Active Tags • Read-Only & Read-Write, WORM • Sensor Tags • Cost $.50 - $1.00, target cost is $.05.
More on readers • Antenna & Electronics • Standard Interfaces • Read Range • High Frequency (850-950 MHz and 2.4-5 GHz) • Intermediate Frequency (10-15 MHz) • Low Frequency (100-500kHz)
Data communication in RFID • Limited by the power and modulation/demodulation capabilities of the tags • Considerations in coding techniques • PPM or PWM to communicate from reader to tag • Manchester or NRZ to communicate from tag to reader.
Collisions • RFID complicates collision detection. • Tags – Probabilistic & Deterministic • Readers – Relinquished control
EPC • Electronic Product Code
Advantages over Barcodes • No need for line-of sight. • Reprogrammable. • Greater data storage. • Less susceptible to damage.
Possible Applications • Airline baggage tracking. • Express parcels ID and tracking. • Product ID and tracking from womb to tomb. • Brand authentication. • Document tracking. • Library material handling. • Wal-Mart
Security & Privacy • Unprotected tags may have vulnerabilities to eavesdropping, traffic analysis, spoofing or denial of service. • Unauthorized readers may compromise privacy by accessing tags without adequate access control.
