Agenda • Overview of Social Media • LinkedIn • Twitter • Facebook • Lessons • Resources
My view of social media • LinkedIn – Black Tie Affair • Facebook – Backyard barbecue with family and friends • Twitter – Tupperware party… bunch of mixed bowls with missing lids! • By the way – when someone tells you they are a social media expert….
How it works • Voice • Visibility • Networks • Audience • Flexibility • Endless opportunities
When using Social Media… • Engage • Interact • Provide value • Be respectful • Don’t brag, boast or make a big deal out of helping others.
When using Social Media… • Your words are out there for ALL to see! • So are your pictures…
LinkedIn • Professional networking site • Connections in degrees • 1st connections – Can be viewed and connected at any time • 2nd Degree – Contacts of the people you know • 3rd Degree – People THEY know…
Profiles - Optimization • Who you are and what you do! • Searchable based on keywords and name • Have you “Googled” your name? If so, what comes up?
What makes you stand out! • Profile is concise with key words • Connections – but make them count • Recommendations • Participation – be active • Questions and Answers • Groups Let’s look at these areas!
Twitter and Tweets • What is twitter? • 140 characters or less to share thoughts, ideas and information • Unlike LinkedIn, you can follow, engage converse with anyone • # are used to designate topics • @ when you are speaking / responding to someone
Facebook • Generally on a more “personal” level. • Great way to share pictures and events with family. • Use the settings wisely
Food for thought… • Set objectives for why you are using Social Media to network • Stay true to your objectives • Be humble in your approach • Always listen and engage • Be respectful of others thoughts and ideas • Don’t be someone you are not
