NLI (National Letter of Intent) 2014 TUCKER RECRUITING
What is the National Letter of Intent (NLI) ? • The NLI is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution • A prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters). • The institution agrees to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters). • Basic penalty for not fulfilling the NLI agreement: A student-athlete has to serve one year in residence (full-time, two semesters or three quarters) at the next NLI member institution and lose one season of competition in all sports.
Valid NLI • The NLI must be accompanied by an athletics aid agreement. • Must include the NCAA ID. • May NOT be signed prior to the signing date. • NLI MUST be co-signed by parent for prospects under 21. • NLI is verified and validated by The Conference Office.
When can I sign an NLI? • Prospective student-athletes enrolling in a four-year institution • Must be a full time student • Must be 1st time enrolling
When can I sign an NLI? • Signing day is the FIRST official day that prospects may sign LOI’s (Letter of Intent) • The NLI becomes null and void after 7 days if not signed and submitted • The institutions/universities have 14 days to submit to NCAA before it is deemed null and void. NOTE: parents need to understand that you DO NOT have to sign on SIGNING DAY!
NLI Misconceptions • An NLI is not the same as a verbal or written scholarship offer. • Verbal commitments are not binding on either end. (yours or the schools) • NLI, however, is a binding document
NLI Misconceptions • NLI extends over a one year period • NLI prohibits other member institutions from pursuing or recruiting a prospect any longer. • It officially ends your recruitment • Does not apply to non member institutions (there are 600 members) • Doesn’t include IVY League & Service Academies • NO DIII, NAIA, or JUCO/Prep schools either!
What if there’s a Coaching change? • A prospective student-athlete signs an NLI with an Institution, not with a coach. If the coach leaves, the prospect is still bound by the provisions of the NLI.
NLI Fulfillment • An NLI is fulfilled in only 2 ways: attend the school you signed with a one academic school year; or graduating from a 2 year JUCO if that’s who you signed with out of high school.
