For Linux/Unix: • Copy the folder ‘SalsaJ-Soft’ in your home directory • Open xterm and go to the ‘~/SalsaJ-Soft’ folder • Run the software with order : make salsaj Installation • For Windows: • Copy the folder ‘SalsaJ-Soft’ in your home directory • Open this folder and click on 'salsaj.bat' • For Mac : • Copy the folder ‘SalsaJ-Soft’ in your home directory • Open this folder and click on 'salsaj.jar'
Click on the icon or click on ‘Open’ in the ‘File’ menu Choose your image, e.g. the image ‘ sny.fits ’: Open an image How to adjust the image‘s brightness?
To adjust the image, click on this icon as below : Or select the option ‘Window/level…’ in the ‘Image’ menu A new window will be displayed : click ‘Auto’
Plot a segment on the image to get the corresponding plot profile. Make a profile You must indicate the two ends of the segment with the mouse. The cursor on the segment displays the actual position on the profile.
The Look-Up Table (LUT) represents the relation between colour and intensity of stars. Select the option ‘Show LUT’ in the ‘Image’ menu. Display the Look-Up Table
How to change the LUT: Select the option ‘Lookup Tables’ in the ‘Image‘ menu, for example ‘Red‘.
Other LUT for example : Multi-colour LUT ‘Spectrum’ ‘Green’ ‘Blue’
The photometry tool enables to measure the intensity of stars. Photometry Click on the object you want to measure the photometry The result appears in the second window.:
Basic operations (add/subtract, etc.) Open two images to make some basic operations : Adjust images with ‘Auto’
Choose the images, the operation and click ‘OK’ Add two images To compare two images, it is interesting to add them : Select in the ‘Operations’ menu the option ‘Image Calculator…’, the result will be created in a new window.

Open three images: Select in the ‘Image’ menu the ‘Stacks’ menu and select the option ‘Convert Images to Stack’(1) . Choose in the ‘Image’ menu the menu ‘Colour’ and select the option ‘Convert Stack to RGB’(2). RGB photometry & astrophotography On the way to real colour images… (1) (2)
