Types of Nouns: • All nouns are either Common OR Proper • Common Noun – Names nonspecific or general nouns (never capitalized) Ex: Movie, doorbell, school • Proper Noun – Names a specific noun (always capitalized) Ex: New York, City, Ms. D’Urso, Thor, Sheetz, DuBois Middle School
Other Types of Nouns 2. All nouns are also either AbstractOR Concrete a. Concrete Noun – nouns that can be sensed (seen, heard, smelled, tasted, and/or touched) Examples: hairspray, mulch, money, Mary Kate, book, popcorn b. Abstract Noun– nouns that name an idea, feeling, quality, or characteristic (can’t be sensed) Examples: dishonesty, love, family, excitement, happiness, insanity, anger
One more thing… 3. In addition to a noun being either abstractOR concrete AND common or proper, a noun MAY or MAY NOT be a collective noun. Collective Noun – a noun that names a group of people WITHOUT being plural (NO –s, -esat the end) Examples: herd, class, audience, crowd, faculty, gang, flock, children, Congress, family
