Project Objectives • To foster effective, timeous delivery of acaricides to the department’s Animal Health Centres and dip tanks. • To Promote farmer involvement in animal health programs • To enhance technical capability among extension staff. • To provide reliable performance reports and updates for decision making

  3. Expected Outputs • Dipping chemicals provided at dip tank level and capacity building of the dipping committees in charge of dipping • Improved technical capacity of livestock extension staff. • Newcastle disease vaccination and Avian Influenza and Newcastle disease surveillance • A sustainable community based animal health management system (dipping and vaccination)

Small Stock Dipping • Limited to a few areas where there are already established small stock dip tanks (Matabeleland South and North). • In the other areas where farmers have no experience with small stock dipping farmers are very reluctant to accept the practice. • Activities so far have been limited to awareness campaigns by extension staff to educate farmers.

Progress to date (ND Vaccination & AI Awareness) • Vaccination under this project covered Mashonaland West, Mashonaland Central, Matebeleland North and Matebeleland South provinces . • All four provinces have completed CBV training and the one round of vaccinations. • The other four provinces were vaccinated under the AU-IBAR VACNADA project.

Sustainability of a community based animal health system • Communities were receptive to the idea that they benefit better by actively participating in the running their animal health programs in their communities with technical advice from the DVFS. • All dip tanks had functional dipping committees and dip fee collection improved two fold from 2010. • An average of 85% of villages in the country have capacity to conduct ND vaccination on their own when they are provided with the I-2 vaccine. • Farmers were, however, requesting for provision of more poultry veterinary remedies (even on cost recovery) to cover other important diseases and conditions that affect production and productivity.
