  2. Howareoilandholywatersymbolic? HolywaterremindscatholicsthecleansingpowerofGod’sloveandforgiveness. Oilusedinthesacramentshasalwaysbeenseenasameansandasymbolofhealingthebodyandspirit. CandlesorvotivelightsareburnedasasymboloftheirownwishtogiveourselvestoGod. Whenpeopleleaveflowersatagravesideordecoratethegraveonananniversary, itisnotmerelydecoration. Thoseflowersrepresentindividuals' leavingsomethingofthemselvesbytherestingplacesoftheirlovedones.

  3. One Last Celebration ThedaybeforeAshWednesday, February 12 thisyear, manypeoplewillcelebratethe "feastbeforethefast" withMardiGras. MardiGras (Frenchfor "FatTuesday"), asweknowittoday, actuallycomesfromthetraditioncalledShrovetide. ShrovetidewasthefinalcelebrationbeforeLent. DuringLent, peoplewouldtypicallyweardarkclothing, abstainfrommeatandrichfoods, andavoidcelebrations. Therefore, ShroveTuesday—thedaybeforeLent—providedpeoplewithanopportunitytoengageinonelastcelebration, wearcolorfulcostumesanddecorations, anduseuptherichfoodsintheirhomes. Inmanypartsoftheworld, ShroveTuesdayisstillreferredtoasPancakeDay. Inanattempttouseuprichfoods, peoplefeastonitemssuchaspancakes, sausages, baconorotherscrapsofmeat. AnothertraditionofMardiGrasistheKingCake, acircular-shapedpastrydecoratedwithicingandcoloredsugar. Thecolorsofthesugar—whicharealsothecolorsofMardiGras—arepurple, greenandgold. Thecolors, inorder, signifyjustice, faithandpower. Asmallplasticbabyisinsertedinsidethecake. Whoevergetsthebabyinhisorherpieceissaidtohavegoodluckforthenextyear—andmustalsosupplynextyear'scake! 

  4. Ashes AshWednesdayliturgiesaresomeofthebestattendedintheentireyear. Ashesareanancientsymbolofrepentance (sackclothandashes). Theyalsoremindcatholicsoftheirmortality ("rememberthatyouaredust") andthusofthedaywhenwewillstandbeforeGodandbejudged. Topreparewellforthedaytheydie, catholicsmustdienowtosinandrisetonewlifeinChrist. BeingmarkedwithashesatthebeginningofLentindicatesourrecognitionoftheneedfordeeperconversionoftheirlivesduringthisseasonofrenewal.

  5. Blessedpalms AscatholicsneartheendofLent, theycelebratePassion (Palm) Sunday. Atthebeginningoftheliturgy, theyreceivepalmsinmemoryofChrist'striumphalentryintoJerusalem. Asasymboloftriumph, thepalmspointustowardChrist'sresurrectionandmightremindthemofthesaintsinheaven "wearingwhiterobesandholdingpalmbranchesintheirhands».
