  7. Title III • Fall 2006, CCC is awarded Title III • Distance Learning - one of three primary activities • For DL: funding supports Blackboard Bootcamps, QAP, and now, online services.

  8. Why online services? We must (look at our DL data) SACS “Students have adequate access to the range of services appropriate to support the programs”

  12. Assessment • Quantitative data, such as: • Number of users and time of use; • Persistence: Withdrawals & failures • IN & HY BIO - FA08 - 20% non-success rate • IN & HY BIO FA08 - 13% W rate • IN MAT 140 - FA08 - 53%(!) • Retention • Grade distributions

  13. Assessment • Quantitative data, such as: Number of users and time of use: • March ‘08 - Nov ‘08: • 220 hours - 70 users • 85 hours: English/Writing • 60 hours: Math • 50 hours: Biology • 25 hours: Anatomy & Physiology

  14. Assessment • Qualitative data, such as interviews & focus groups with: •  Students •  Tutors •  Course instructors

  15. Successes & Challenges • “Lisa, I cannot thank you enough (and my GPA thanks you <grin>)” • “Thank you so much, Lisa. This is perfect.” • “Thank you my new best friend, LOL. Will be sure to let you know the grade and comments...” • “You are AWESOME! Thanks for all your help!”

  16. Successes & Challenges “I want to commend Brooks, he answered my question very professionally at 3 in the morning… Students at CCC are very fortunate to have this service at their fingertips.” “Don, help! How does a student access the on-line tutoring for math help?”

  17. Successes & Challenges

  18. Successes & Challenges “What doesn’t work so well is that the instructors don’t use the online feature in any assignments. If the students are not made to use the service, they may be more reluctant to check it out.” “I have noticed an increase in emails ever since the announcement of online registration (webadvisor). This may encourage students to transition to seeking out online services, in addition to classes.”

  19. Successes & Challenges “Because who can predict the future? Who knows when I will have an increase in traffic and usage. We're still in the infancy of online everything. It will take awhile for students to get used to the idea of online services. Let them get used to online classes first. That's still in the early stages. “Plus, eventually students will realize that webcam, email, or IM is cheaper than a long distance phone call.”
