  7. Employees of Bjorn’s Audio Video watch a presentation about theFund. Bjorn Dybdahl says he and his wife long ago decided that community involvement was important enough that they should donate to good causes, and he encourages his company’s employees to support theFund via payroll deductions.

  8. John Feik: Support culture and arts with theFund With the overwhelming support of the new Performing and Cultural Arts Center initiative that was part of the visitor tax referendum, the excitement surrounding the opening of the Stieren Center at the McNay Art Museum and the success of the first-time Luminarias event, it is clear the citizens of San Antonio want our community to be at the forefront when it comes to offering the best in arts and culture. As a long-time supporter of the arts and the CEO of an international company headquartered in San Antonio, I am proud of the manner in which the business community has gotten behind all these initiatives. Looking ahead, it is critical that the business community continue to put its corporate muscle behind the arts and help find new monies to support arts and cultural organizations. A new fundraising model called theFund — San Antonio's United Arts Fund — is bringing together the business community and the arts in an effort to ensure a sustainable program to fund arts and cultural organizations. At DFB Pharmaceuticals, we participate in theFund through a workplace giving campaign. I have to admit I was reluctant at first, but I am pleased to report it has been extremely successful and our employees have welcomed the chance to give to arts and cultural organizations. theFund representatives keep their presentations to our employees short, and they are sensitive to our various work shifts. Most important, our employees never feel pressured to give, but increasingly have been generous each year. Last year alone, our employees raised $6,000 through donations ranging from $1 to $20 or more per paycheck. What I truly find inspiring is that each year, more employees not only give but also get more involved in the arts. For those who haven't heard about theFund (also known as the Bexar County Arts and Cultural Fund), it works much like the United Way. All monies raised through workplace giving contributions go toward helping a diverse group of 28 arts and cultural organizations. Cities are becoming more aggressive in attracting new businesses. San Antonio must distinguish itself from the competition, and having a strong presence and reputation for supporting the arts is essential. A thriving arts and cultural industry is a major factor in drawing recruitment and business retention, not to mention elevating our city's quality of life for our employees and our citizens. theFund is a proven fundraising model that can provide thousands, if not millions, of new financial resources to our arts and cultural organizations. Just as important, theFund has the potential of reaching new audiences. The business community needs to get behind the arts and cultural industry to continue to position San Antonio as a competitive destination city. theFund is a great way to accomplish this. I urge you to find out more and implement a workplace campaign at your business. For more information, go to www.theFundSA.org.
