EEO THE LAWS The Civil Rights Act of 1964 Made illegal discrimination based on: Race, Sex, Color, Religion, and National Origin Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) Discrimination illegal, based on age 40-65; amended in 1974 to cover Federal Employees 40-70; amended in 1978 to cover Federal employees 40 and above The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Illegal to discriminate against qualified physically or mentally handicapped individuals - Amended in 1978 to cover Federal employees Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1974 Amended the 1964 Civil Rights Act to: cover Federal, State and Local Government Employees; made Civil Service Commission lead agency in EEO; gave enforcement Authority to EEOC

  8. EEO What is Stereotyping? It is…. . . . . . . …forming a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group, and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment.

PREJUDICE EEO • An unfavorable opinion of feelings formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason; • Any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable; • Unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes especially of a hostile nature, directed against Race, Color, Religion, Disability, Gender, Age or National Origin.

  10. EEO DISCRIMINATION Any act, or failure to act, impermissibly, based solely, or in part, on a person’s race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, or mental or physical handicap, that adversely affects privileges, benefits, or working conditions or results in disparate treatment.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT EEO Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that involves unwelcomed sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal and physical conduct of a sexual nature when: • Submission to, or rejection of, such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of a person’s job, pay or career; or, • Such conduct interferes with an individual’s performance or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.

Proactive Measures Exhibit Professional Behavior in the Work Place Are there offensive... • Photographs or pinups, cartoons, written jokes? • Cups, toys or objects that are suggestive in nature? Review policy statements or endorsements on the prevention of sexual harassment. Discuss the atmosphere of the workplace on a regular basis with all subordinates. EEO
