  1. October 22, 2012Welcome to ENG 1510 Composition I

  2. Tonight’s agenda • Reading quiz • Review classification readings • A classification activity • Grammar workshop – review • Progress reports • Break (10 min.) • Grammar workshop – fragments/run-ons • Questions re: essay #2? • Taking new approaches – “Ordeal by Cheque"

  3. reading quiz – classification (MR, p. 159-73) Directions: Answer each question in complete sentences. 5 points each, 15 points total Define classification. What ethical issues surround the process of classification? You read four different classification essays in the Mercury Reader. Write a summary paraphrase for one of these essays.

  4. Review classification readings • Discuss each of the questions below with a partner. Be prepared to report out. • P. 311, DQ #2 • P. 314, DQ #1, 3 • P. 320, DQ #1 • P. 324-25, DQ #1, 2, 5

  5. A classification activity • Read the song excerpts on the handout. • I’ll play a snippet of each song as you read the lyrics. • Working with those around you, classify the songs using a tree diagram like the ones on p. 160-61. • Start at the top with the most general classification, then keep dividing into different categories. • How many different levels can you create? • Are your classifications trivial or significant? In other words, could you write about them?

  6. Break • See you in ten minutes …

  7. Grammar review • As you come in from break, please turn in the following: • NY Times article – verbs, subjects, adjectives, adverbs • P. 451, grammar exercise

  8. Grammar workshop – fragments/run-ons & comma splices • MR, p. 453-57 • Soapbox: This is a big issue that affects your ability to control voice. When you create run-ons, you create confusion. No matter what you think about grammar, etc., we all will have to communicate in writing. If you want to relay meaning to a reader, you must be able to write a complete sentence.

  9. Questions re: essay #2? • Remember: You only need three copies for our peer review workshop. • How’s your writing process going? • What clarifications/advice can I offer?

  10. Taking new approaches – “Ordeal by Cheque” • Read “Ordeal by Cheque” in a group of two or three. Take notes on the story’s development. • Discuss: Why tell a story in this manner? What is gained by this narrative approach? What is lost? • Report out.

  11. Taking new approaches –“Ordeal by ???” • This is an optional homework assignment. You may elect to complete this assignment to earn up to 20 extra classwork/homework points. • Create your own original story. • Tell your story using a unique, nontraditional method. • Some ideas: • “Ordeal by Twitter Feed” • “Ordeal by Debit Card” • “Ordeal by Newspaper Headline” • “Ordeal by Text Message”
