What do we mean by SG and why it is important to talk about it • Social Good (or common good) is generally defined as a good or service that benefits the largest number of people (society) in the largest possible way • Most people perceive education as a social or common good • But let us examine how education benefits society in the largest possible way I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London
Education is principally seen in government documents as the promotion of the knowledge and skills deemed necessary for economic success. How does SG relate to education I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London
According to LTRP, the first principle of effective education and learning, should be: • To equip learners for life in its broadest sense. Learning should help individuals and groups to develop the intellectual, personal and social resources that will enable them to participate as active citizens, contribute to economic development and flourish as individuals in a diverse and changing society. This means that educational programmes must pay serious attention to issues of equity and social justice for all (Teaching & Learning Research Programme , ESRC 2002-09). http://www.tlrp.org/themes/themes/tenprinciples.html How does SG relate to education I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London
Aristotle teaches that the highest human good is ‘eudaimonia’ (happiness, well being) • To achieve ‘eudaimonia’ human beings must live a virtuous life • It follows then, that social or common goods such as education should be helping people to live virtuous lives How does SG relate to education I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London
How should education do that? • Prudence (phronēsis): the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason • Justice (dikaiosynē): fairness • Temperance (sōphrosynē): the practice of self-control, restraint, moderation • Courage (andreia; tharos): fortitude, forbearance, strength, endurance, and the ability to confront fear, uncertainty, and intimidation • Compassion (symponia): understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it. WE ARE ALL CONNECTED • Proper self love: understanding our self, caring and respecting our selves • Friendship (filia): genuine, non-exploitative, wishing good for the other • Forgiveness: I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London
We could argue that the TLRP view of education is based on Aristotle’s virtues How does SG relate to education I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London
You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do, makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make. My belief about the purpose of education as a common good is to help develop global citizens. • This implies that both KNOWLEDGE & VIRTUES should be included into any educational programme. • Knowledge without virtue can be cruel and dangerous • ‘Virtue’ without knowledge can also be cruel and dangerous I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London
A global citizen should be able to: • understand the meaning of and appreciate the value of diversity and equality • communicate with others with respect • act with compassion and genuine interest for others • to live in harmony with others not in conflict I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London
How are the values and principles of effective education promoted through ERASMUS+ projects How SG promoted by ERASMUS + I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London
My ERASMUS story…and probably that of thousands others • Being involved in ERASMUS projects has enabled me and my colleagues to create some useful outputs related to intercultural education. • But the benefits go beyond the outputs. We have learnt: • differences in values • differences in communication • build common platforms • The education and healthcare systems, the transport systems etc, etc, • The history and culture of the countries • Debank our stereotypes of each other I.Papadopoulos, Changing Lives through Mobility and Cross-border Cooperation: People and Culture, 10-02-2016, London
