FDOT’s ADA Program • VISION: Accessibility for all Florida travelers • MISSION: The Department will provide a safe transportation system that ensures mobility for all travelers, including persons with disabilities • GOAL: To be one of the most accessible state transportation systems in the country AASHTO – Subcommittee on Design
Program Summary • The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is responsible for approx. 12,500 miles of roadways on SHS • Includes about 2,500 miles of sidewalks and 1,300 Department-owned buildings CR-21 AASHTO – Subcommittee on Design
36” Program Summary • Duty to provide accessibility for users of our services, programs and facilities, including persons with disabilities • In January 1992, FDOT initiated our ADA/ Accessibility program • Implement the ADA/accessibility requirements for the Department CR-1 AASHTO – Subcommittee on Design

Program Summary • The FDOT endeavors to comply with the “ADA Standards for Accessible Design” • Issued as the “ADA Accessibility Guidelines” (ADAAG) and enforced by U.S. DOJ & U.S. DOT CR-3 AASHTO – Subcommittee on Design
Program Summary • FDOT adopts federal accessibility standards as Department Design Standards • As federal guidance and standards are updated, FDOT adopts these as state standards • We strive to stay on the leading edge of transportation accessibility CR-21 (sim.) w/ Detectable Warning AASHTO – Subcommittee on Design
Program Accomplishments • ADA / Facilities Accessibility Procedure implemented • Original 1992 -- Updated - 1994, 1997, 2001 & 2005 • Facility ADA Surveys & Transition Plans conducted • Surveys - 1992 & 2001 • Transition Plans - 1992 & 2001 • ADA Self-Assessment of policies and procedures conducted • 1992 & ongoing AASHTO – Subcommittee on Design
Program Accomplishments • ADA Modifications to standards and guidelines provided • 1992 & ongoing • ADA program & contact information provided on WEB site • 2001 & ongoing • http://www.dot.state.fl.us/structures/ada/default.htm • ADA Training provided by Department • Department project managers, Design Consultants, Contractors, CEIs, Inspectors, etc. CR-1 w/ Detectable Warning AASHTO – Subcommittee on Design
Program Accomplishments • Florida is one of the first states to have TDDs/ TTYs at interstate rest areas and Turnpike service plazas • Family (unisex) restrooms added to rest areas • Currently in about one-half • Ultimately in all AASHTO – Subcommittee on Design

Program Accomplishments • Some Department Standards go beyond ADA requirements. • Guidance from the Access Board and USDOT/FHWA • Detectable Warnings – “truncated domes” • 48” min. Accessible Route - PAR • Other standards are under consideration for additional work • Accessibility on bridges • Coordination of accessibility & safety issues • Barrier walls & handrails • Drainage inlets, grates & scuppers AASHTO – Subcommittee on Design
