  5. WHY PREPARE? • LOCAL EMERGENCIES • Fire – house fire, or neighborhood fire • Loss of Communication– phone lines, cell tower PIPELINE BREAKS • Gas Leaks • Water main damage • Sewage line breaks etc. Loss of Utilities – Electric, Heat, Water

PREPARE AHEAD • When a disaster strikes it's too late to prepare • Checklists are not enough • Items may not be available or accessible • If you don‘t get out right away, you may not be able to get out at all! • Exit roads might be impassable or destroyed • Heavy traffic may prevent evacuation

  7. BASICS • Water • Shelter • Food • Tools & Protection • Money • Plan (family meet up, evacuation route) • Communication (plan for communication if separated) • Transportation

WATER • MYLAR WATER POUCHES • (4oz./ 8oz.) • REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE • Accessible to waist pack or back pack • PURIFYING WATER • Filtration system: Eliminate bacteria • (popular brands Katadyne or MSR) • Coffee filters to filter sediment • Chemical additives: • Purification/chlorine tablets; Silver Solution • Boiling or distilling

FOOD • MREs – Fully constituted (convenient but heavy) • FREEZE DRIED OR DEHYDRATED FOOD PACKS Just add water (light weight) • ENERGY OR CEREAL BARS • EMERGENCY FOOD TABLETS (15 day supply=2 lbs, developed for NASA) During first week …expect to lose about 8 lbs. After first week, weight stabilizes unless very active • COMFORT FOOD: coffee, candy, bullion, drink mix
