  2. Background • On 1st November 1993 : Royal Degree established 23 natural Protected Areas of which BoengChhmar as Ramsar Site covers 28,000 ha. • On 10th April 2001, Royal Decree established TS as BR • By October 1997, designated as Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO under MAB Programme

  3. Location of BTC Core Area • Located in Kampong Thom Province • Stung Distrit • PeambangCommmune, 5 villages, 583 families (2013)- population-3296

  10. Activities and achievement - Formed committee to demarcate the boundary of the core areas - Constructed 6 boundary markers for the core area

  11. -Restricted Zones_ put signs to inform local villagersandoutsiders_ 21 particular accessroads Rangers consist of 4 groups conduct Mist patrol 40 days per month to define status of wildlife, waterbirds, threats and fishing activities.

  15. Confiscated birds from villager and released into the wild.

  16. Established CPA • 27 families formed as CPA at BTC core area. • 5 ha of the CPA designated as the conservation zone • CPA approved by Minister of MoE and provincial governor

  17. Capacity building for staffs and rangers • MIST training • Proposal writing and Fund raising Skills • BirdlifeOrganizaiton and IUCN trained the Rangers, howtomanage Mist data and survey .

  18. Challenges - Climate Change? affected to biodiversity of the core area. Examaple on April 10, 2013 big storm hit BoeungTonlechhmarkilled fish totally estimated 20- 25 tons.

  19. Challenges (cont.) • Upstream dams • Illegal fishing and wildlife hunting in the core area are never demolished even our currently conservation effort • Forestfire during the dry season • Institutional complex situation

  20. Next Actions • Clarify roles and responsibility of management authorities and strengthen cooperation with local authorities and • Enhance conservation participation of the local communities • Continue to conduct MIST patrol • Update CAM plan
