London Air Raids • Who: Nazis (Luftwaffe) • What: began as bombing of British air fields, then bombed London & other cities (A LOT) • When: July 1940 – May 1941 • 57 consecutive days of bombing • 127 night raids (mainly on London) • Where: Great Britain • Why/Importance: the British never surrendered and were not taken over by the Germans=> Hitler eventually gave up & went to Russia

Pearl Harbor • Who: Japanese attack U.S. • What: Japan was upset at the U.S. for trying to shut them out of the Indo-China war. Revenge =>Surprise attack on U.S. naval base, huge loss for the U.S. armed services • Sank 4 battleships and damaged four more • sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minelayer • destroyed 188 aircraft • caused personnel losses of 2,402 killed and 1,282 wounded. • When: December 7, 1941 • Where: Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii

D-Day cont. • Where: Beaches of Normandy (France) • 5 “Beaches”: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, & Sword • Why/Importance: single largest amphibious attack of all time; Allies were able to gain ground in Western Europe & push the Germans back => led to the liberation of Paris in August of 1944
