  2. Reading to Children: • Helps them develop their imaginations.  • Opens doorways to other worlds • Gives them vicarious experiences • Helps fulfill a child’s basic needs

  3. A child’s Basic needs • Security • Achievement • Belonging • To love and be loved • Fun and change • Aesthetic satisfaction • Need to know

  4. Security E M O T I O N A L • This can be: • Physical • Spiritual • Emotional • Intellectual. Physical Spiritual Intellectual

  5. Security Continued • Gives them a sense of comfort & well-being • Chief symbol of security: •   Material satisfaction • Their own clothes, toys, books etc.

  6. Achievement I did it! • To be happy and well adjusted children need a sense of competence • Reading gives them the ability to do or be something worthy of admiration

  7. Belonging • Needing to be accepted by: • Family • Friends • Neighborhood • Organization • Even gangs • Books give children an outlet to be accepted.

  8. To love and be loved • We find substitutes when our need for love is not being met. • Gives a rise to romance literature for adolescents • Example: Twilight

  9. Fun and change • Children can have fun sitting in the comfort of their own rooms. • They need to play and pretend so they can come back to reality refreshed. • Gives children a change from their everyday lives.

  10. Aesthetic Satisfaction • Enables children to see beauty in the world • They know that there are good people

  11. Need to know • Children are curious • Satisfies that curiosity • Teaches them new things in different ways

  12. Different types of childrens books • Picture books • Poetry • Fiction • Science fiction • Fantasy • Historical fiction • Contemporary realistic fiction

  13. Types of children’s books Continued • Non-fiction: • Biographies • Trade books • Text books • How-to • There are so many different kinds of books for anyone and everyone to read and enjoy

  14. Poor quality books • Can give children entertainment but do not help them learn problem solving • Make it hard to identify quality vs. books that are lacking

  15. How to choose quality Children’s literature • Similar to choosing adult literature • Lively action and plot • Worthwhile theme or message • Unique and memorable character • Style that reads aloud delightfully

  16. Values children can gain from quality literature • Teaches about self and others • Broadens experiences • Gives insight into living

  17. Values continued • Teaches about the world and beings on it • Giving them a respect for life • Developing a sense of beauty and decency in humans and animals • Helps them with emotions • Anger • Sadness • Happiness • etc

  18. Recommendations for Infancy • Any book as long as they hear your voice • Now is an important time for them to hear language • Great time for bonding • They like books concerning parent and child relations

  19. Recommendations for Infancy Continued • Basic needs can be established during reading time • Cuddling • Warmth • Companionship • Books can help them learn motor skills • Can become aware of physical self • Dr. Seuss’s The Foot Book is good to read to infants

  20. Recommendations for Early childhood • Concept books dealing with • time (before-after) • Size • Color • Differences • Nursery Rhymes • Folk Tales • Mother Goose Rhymes and Picture books are good to read during early childhood.

  21. Recommendations for Middle Childhood • Books with characters in conflict • Children learn to take responsibility for their actions • Give them a good balance between fantasy and realistic fiction • Harry Potter is a good read for middle childhood

  22. Recommendations for Late childhood • Informational books teaching new tasks • Books of other children’s struggles to prove to their parents they are competent • Chapter books • Books with mysteries and puzzles

  23. In Conclusion • Reading to your child can only help them in the long run! • It helps them with their basic needs. • Strengthens your relationship with them • Helps them in school • Gives them different experiences. • So……
