Considerations before you travel Choose your destination wisely and consider the following! • Transportation - getting to your holiday destination • Air quality - city tours, home and abroad • Terrain- access for mobility aids • Location, Location, Location - hills and dales • Weather- hot, cold, wind, snow. Will this have an impact on YOURbreathing • Fitness to fly test - discuss with your respiratory specialist team whether you require this test!
Ordering oxygen in the UK BaywaterHealthcare • Baywater Healthcare offer a FREE holiday oxygen service ANYWHEREin England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland • Those wishing to travel to the Republic of Ireland will need to rent their oxygen equipment from an oxygen company • It is essential that you plan your holiday in advance, allowing 2-4 weeks for your oxygen order to be arranged with the oxygen provider for that region in the UK
Trains, planes and automobiles • You are able to travel on public transport with your oxygen equipment, however there is no national guidance as to what the trains, coaches, buses and taxi companies will allow • Check with the train company prior to departure to ensure oxygen equipment is permissible • The taxi legislation office at your local council will provide information on taxi companies that are registered to carry disabled passengers
Trains, planes and automobiles • If you do use public transport, always ensure that your oxygen cylinder or equipment is secure whilst the vehicle is moving • It is essential that you refer to your local oxygen provider handbook for advice regarding the safe transportation of oxygen cylinders ref: Baywater HealthcareHandbook, 2016
Coach Holidays • Talk to the coach operators • National Holidays will allow oxygen cylinders on board, however you must be able to carry them on-board yourself! • No plugs for portable oxygen concentrators

PlanesFitness to fly test/hypoxic challenge • Check with your Respiratory Specialist Team whether you need to perform a fitness to fly test/hypoxic challenge prior to your holiday • The test is performed at the Lung Function Department at Castle Hill Hospital – please ask your Respiratory Specialist Nurses • The test involves simulating cabin pressure inhaling 15% oxygen for 30 minutes
Planes If you require inflight oxygen your airline will ask for a medical certificate, commonly referred to as a Fit to Fly Certificate or MEDIF (Medical Information Form). Thomas Cook • Will not allow you to take YOUR own oxygen on-board! • They will supply it at £100 per flight. • To be arranged at least 21 days prior to your flight • Call their call centre prior to booking your holiday
Easyjet • Do not supply oxygen • Small cylinders <50cms in length and up to 250mm in diameter are permitted on the flight • Maximum 2 cylinders • MEDIF certificate required confirming you are fit to fly and that the oxygen cylinders are required for medical reasons
BA will provide oxygen free of charge at flow rates of 2 or 4 litres • The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have approved several Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) • Must be requested 48 hours in advance • However it can only be provided to 1 person per flight!!! • BA can’t provide oxygen on the ground in the airports • Medical information must be provided so BA can ascertain fitness to fly. MEDIF’s to be completed by passenger and physician
Cruises/Ferries • Omega-Advanced Aeromedical and Pure 02 both provide rental packages for cruise holidays • P&O Cruises allow oxygen on-board but like oxygen users to obtain their rental equipment from Omega-Advanced Aeromedical • Cruises: Talk to your tour operator about on-board facilities, disability access and wheelchairs

European Health Insurance Card (E111) • It is recommended that you obtain a EHIC card prior to travelling abroad • The card is free and can be downloaded from the internet or obtained from the post office • The card is not a replacement to travel insurance • The EHIC entitles you to free or reduced cost medical treatment • The card should be carried with you at all times whilst traveling abroad
