UNIT3 Nervous coordination Receiving a stimulus • The nervous system receives a stimulus from the sense organs. • This stimulus reaches the areas of the central nervous system that are involved in processing it. The image of the target that her eyes have captured travels to the area of her brain involved in processing this information. Imagine an archer aiming for a target. UNIT3 Nervous coordination The production of a response • Once the stimulus has been received, the different areas of the central nervous system produce a response. • This response is sent from the central nervous system to the different nerves, which transmit the response to the effectors. The central nervous system transmits the response to the effectors. Continuing with our example of the archer, once her brain has processed the image of the target, it prepares a response. UNIT3 Nervous coordination Carrying out the response • When the response reaches the effectors, they carry it out. • Although some responses (secretions, for example) do not involve muscles, most responses do involve the movement of muscles, which can be involuntary, reflexive or voluntary.
